Song Parodies -> "Pope John Paul"

Original Song Title:

"Big Bad John"

 (MP3)
Original Performer:

Jimmy Dean

Parody Song Title:

"Pope John Paul"

Parody Written by:

The Comedian

The Lyrics

He was flyin' all the time, and when he would arrive
He'd kneel down and kiss, the ground, glad he's alive
Kinda broad at the shoulder with power in his eyes
And everybody knew he'd never compromise - John Paul
(John Paul, John Paul)
Pope John Paul
(John Paul)

Poland's the land that Pope John Paul called home
He grew up during the war and prayed all alone
He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy
But when he spoke you knew, a holy guy was John Paul

He hid from Nazis during World War Two
And he studied for the priesthood in secret, too
Archbishop of Krakow in his home-land
Elevated to a Cardinal was that holy man, John Paul
(John Paul, John Paul)
Pope John Paul
(John Paul)

Then came the day they were voting for a Pope
When a two-thirds vote showed the Cardinals' hope
Lay in a Polish bishop and priest
The Holy Spirit brought, to his destiny, John Paul

Through the dust and the smoke of this world's own hell
Walked that giant of a man that the faithful knew well
Grabbed the Cross of Jesus, that Bishop of Rome
And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone - John Paul
(John Paul, John Paul)
Pope John Paul
(John Paul)

And with all of his strength he gave his mighty love
And he showed all the world there's a light up above
And multitudes scrambled from a spir'tual grave
But the man grew sick - no doctor could save John Paul

With drugs and nurses and medical care
They treated that man with science and prayer
But the Lord above said "Karol, it's time"
Everybody knew it was the end of the line for John Paul
(John Paul, John Paul)
Pope John Paul
(John Paul)

Now the leaders of the world give praise to him
A bulldog of courage in a world of sin
In Two-Thousand-Five on April Two,
Through the Pearly Gates there walked
One strong tough, tough dude... John Paul
(John Paul, John Paul)
Pope John Paul
(John Paul)

Remarkable spoof of an oldie about the Pope legacy. I miss him, too.

With all the nutsy stuff going on about religion these recent days, this skillfully crafted parody was a light on a mountain. Not being Catholic I do not know if the Pope is supposed to, in addition to his other duties, be an exemplar, but this one was. Thank you for remembering him alongside "Big Bad John". There are never enough heroes.

Wonderful tribute, Johnny. Brought tears to my eyes again. (not the parody) 5's

Guy - April 03, 2005 - Report this comment
Finely written JD and a proper tribute to a great world leader. He will be very much missed. I especially loved the ending. I could just see this man entering into eternity so full of strength.
Diddims - April 03, 2005 - Report this comment
I feel sorry that he dies too... if he wasn't against gay rights, pro-choice, contraceptives, and such, I'd miss him even more.
2Eagle - April 03, 2005 - Report this comment
I remember that song Big John - a great rap song. It was most appropriate to use as a tribute to Pope John Paul II. That's one man who will go down in history.
Mr X - April 03, 2005 - Report this comment
IDKTOS but thought this was a nice tribute.

This is one of many parodies that proves that "AmIRight" needs to change the scoring panel. It should not say "How funny," but rather "How effective." This parody is not at all "funny," but it deserves a "5" for "How effective."

Nicely done.

We had to know that some Papal tribute songs were coming, but that's a tough tightrope to walk. Use an uptempo song or too much humor, and some of the faithful will be rather unforgiving. That's why I chose the more melancholy "Eleanor Rigby." That, and its references to a priest and a church. Five puffs of white smoke for making an impossible task work, which is what the next Pope may have to do. I don't know who it will be, but as far a name, my guess is Paul VII. I don't think any would-be successors will have the guts to call himself John Paul III for about a century.

(SOTM). You're clever enough to use any song for any subject, me thinks. I bet you could even do "Shaft" as "Pope" and get away with it. (No idea how you would work around the "his woman" bit though).

Sorry it took me a while to get here, Johnny BD. I was kinda fuzzy on the original and had to track it down. Your rewrite perfectly matches its solemn, sincere tone. This is the kind of parody that the Italians would say only comes along "ogni morte di Papa."

(ABC) DKTOS but not a bad read. Hey is it just me or does the pope remind you of a Sith whenever you see him. Next time you see him on TV try to think of the imperial march music, it's really fun. :-D
