‘Twas in the fall of 63
Down in the port of Subic Bay
When Ensign Moritz took the helm
Of #3 from Carl, SA.
“I’ll show you how to do it, Carl”
Said he, and flashed his boyish grin.
“Hard right rudder, engine back,
The bow swings out, the stern swings
in.”

(Chorus: Camels floating on the bay
It was Ensign Moritz’s unlucky day.
Everyone in Olongapo Town
Knew that VP #3 was going down.)

The engine roared, then came a crash
And wood and armor plating flew.
In the side of #3
A camel came a-crashing through.
Taking water by the gallon
Engine coughed and sputtered out.
Everyone aboard the boat
Knew #3 had gone the route.

Ensign Moritz stood his ground
And gravely viewed his vessel’s
plight.
“Don’t give up the ship!” he cried,
“I have not yet begun to fight!”
He had no wounded he could drag
In by the teeth up to the shore.
It began to look as if
This sinking was a crashing bore.

On the pier an able crane-man
Hearing Moritz’s loud moans,
Dropped his hook down to the stern,
Plucked #3 from Davy Jones.
Plucked her neatly from the water
To the shore to save the day.
But Ensign Moritz still must face
The wrath of Captain Squeeky A.

Now who would have thought that
some two weeks later this same
ensign would be…
Swabbing decks just like a Seaman,
Making sweepers every day.
So ensigns all, let this forewarn you,
Stay out of boats in Subic Bay.
