The Lyrics

I used to take my kids to those crappy temporary carnivals.(Sometimes "for charity") This is a backhanded tribute.
"Fun-day Sunday" at the fair
It seemed there wasn't too much there
Rides they had in disrepair
I eyed them with dismay
They said it was for a good cause
That roller coaster gave me pause
I went in there despite the flaws
And still I had to pay

I've seen the place from both rides now
Went up and down and still somehow
This park's attractions are so small
My money's not well spent ---at all

Forlorn the worn-out ferris wheel
Got dizzy riding creaking steel
The thrills somehow just lacked appeal
No better than a Schwinn
The guy that ran the ride looked pissed
He yelled at children, spat and hissed
I think his name's on Megan's list
He also smelled of gin

I've sat on scum from both rides now
Went round and round and still somehow
This park's attractions are so small
My money's not well spent----at all

Circus jerks were all around
Making my big migraine pound
The crowd was loud, a horrid sound
A really crappy day
I longed to leave right then and there
I couldn't find a bench or chair
But with my kids I didn't dare
I told them they could stay

I've seen this dump from both rides now
Went up and down and still somehow
My brains' distractions aren't so small
My money's not well spent----at all

I've risked my life on both rides now
A dozen times and still somehow
I think I'd rather brave the mall
And maybe not have spent—it all

When I showed this to Mari she busted up over "Megan's list", but I wondered if people not from California would get it. Thanks. Because of all you guys here, I've been on a roll. (Haven't written an original in 2 months)

This was Judy Collins, wasn't it?

Judy had a hit with it. Joni wrote it.

Ah! Nothing like wandering around a carnival, dizzy and nauseous, with the smell of those powdered waffles wafting in your olfactory... Excellent parody Rick!

Rick D - EXTREMELY FUNNY! Yeah, I agree with Mari, it hits high hilarity with the "Megan's List" reference. Hey, when you go back there again I've left you 5 free rides on each "attraction" and 5 free carnival hot dogs. You'll be reeling and retching the whole afternoon.

I had downloaded this one to listen to, I didn't think there were any Joni Mitchell songs I was unaware of! Good job!

I love this. Love it. Sorry to ask you to explain a joke, but what's Megan's list? Oh, and "circus jerks" - heh heh.

There's a law in California named after an abducted and murdered child, called "Megan's Law". I'm not up on the details, but it has to do with a registry of known sex offenders that Californians can look up on line and see what perverts live in their neighborhood. Sounds like a good idea, but the controversy has to do with what sort of offences put you on that list, and the fact you can never get off (So to speak)

Really great. I'm actually not sure if I'd even heard of Megan's List or not, but it somehow it made total sense in context.

Don't know the OS, lyrics like these can more than stand on they're own. And I'll be back should I ever find the song. Until then, very funny stuff Rick.
