Nice concept and great job of pacing. And remember what Milton Berle said: "Any time a person goes into a delicatessen and orders a pastrami on white bread, somewhere a Jew dies."

QC--Apparently Elvis's mother's mother's mother was Jewish, and since Orthodox & Conservative Jews recognize matralineal descent (reform recognizes patralineal descent as well) that technically means Elvis was Jewish (although clearly not a practicing one!). Alvin--Only when he immediately follows Joey Ramone. Rex--LOL! A classic.

Mick Jones of Foreigner or Mick Jones of the Clash? Speaking of Adam Sandler, does Rod Carew ("he converted") count?
MasonR - December 28, 2005 - Report this comment
Steve K--good catch! Mick Jones of the Clash is Jewish. Didn't know about Rod Carew or I might've worked him in!

Thanks PMS and Carol. Steve K--your comment about Rod Carew made me curious...I checked on wickipedia, apparently he married a Jewish woman but he never actually converted, it is an urban legend. I learned something new today! ;-)

As a quarter Jew (a grandfather who was, alas, non-practicing), I am kvelling. (If John Barry were here, you'd have to tell him, "I pull a kvell on you.") You've explained Elvis, but... k.d. lang? Cary Grant, a.k.a. Archibald Leach? And while Rod Carew is not actually Jewish, you should have given a chout-out to Jewish Hall-of-Famers Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax (baseball), Ron Mix (football), and Dolph Schayes (basketball). Of course, for a long time, I thought Bruce was Jewish, thinking "Springsteen" was an anglicization of "Springstein." Turns out he's Italian. And what about Alan King? And Lenny Bruce? Mel Brooks? Gene Wilder?

Michael--thanks--I did a little further digging, it looks like Cary Grant's religious background is...vaguely Jewish. Might be a myth. Not much on KD Lang, but she's on several lists of famous Jewish performers. I considered several of the people you mentioned but I wanted to include less obvious choices.
