The Lyrics

When you were young and in love
with the world and your life
did you think you'd wind up sitting pretty?

Did you dream of the day
when you'd stand proud and say
I've just landed a job in the City?

Ooooooooooooooooooo I've just
Landed a job in the City

Now ambition is spent
it's too late to repent
all that's left is the sorrow and the pity

I'm resigned to my fate
and this job that I hate
no way out now I'm trapped in the City

oooooooooooooooooh where's my life gone?
Oooooooooooooooooh where's my life gone?

But every week at break of day
in my Golf Cabriolet
I head off for that fairway to heaven

When I'm there at the tee
my spirit soars I feel free
I wack my ball up that fairway to heaven

ooooooooooooooooooh where's my ball gone?
Ooooooooooooooooooh where's my ball gone?

Oh thank god there's the ball
I'm not dead after all
I could even make this one a birdie

Keep your nerve - take your time
concentrate on your line
you'll be reaching the end of your journey

wo wo wo wo etc

Oh no its landed in a ditch
what a wind up
from there I'm never going to pitch it

oh wow it made it to the green
I can't believe it
the sweetest shot I think I've ever seen

oooh and it makes me wonder

don't you just love it when you're winning?
It gets me going
my blood is up- my feet don't touch the ground

just need one putt and it's all over
I gotta make it
if this works out I'll buy the next round

the competition's right behind
he's playing games with my mind
pressure's building up again
I bet I wind up with a ten

I know I just can't make this shot
I really think I've lost the plot
This game is nearly over now
It's time to quit and take a bow

The trick is knowing when to stooooooooooooooooooooooop
no more dreaming of that fairway to heaven

Kevin Costner could make a movie out of this.

How nasty of someone to give you a one!!! (And having said that...how do they give you a 5 over all...SOMEONE failed high school math!) Very nicely done...and you really stayed on topic...so it's a really solid song. All 5s from me...and I don't even LIKE GOLF!!

Just a random note: Mark Jonathon Davis wrote a version of this, but refused to distribute it, saying that it wasn't nearly as good as his other parody of this song, 7-11.

neminem, please tell me, who is Mark Jonathon Davis?

Good parody, Martha. But there's no trick in knowing when to stop - you stop after 18 holes.

You said "I wack my ball" hahaha good job.

Mark Jonathan Davis is definitely the second-best parodist after Weird Al... in fact, you occasionally see a few of his mismarked as Weird Al songs on PtPs, most frequently Rice, Rice Baby. He's also the mastermind behind Richard Cheese. His website is kind of... random... but you can get his songs off it: http://www.ideatown.com/mich/index.html

(ABC) Engrossing, martha!

Martha, good job, this was fun. By the way, I wrote "Fairway in 7" to the same original song about a month ago based on a day of golf with another of our amiright authors. If you haven't seen it you might want to take a look at it. Hmmm....I see you posted this in January while I was out of town. I'm glad they don't really seem too similiar, I didn't do a search to see if anyone had done a similar one to mine since the "Search" feature was disengaged at the time and I did not know about the "Google" link at the time.

(ABC) Started out kinda slow, but the humor grew. Nice job.

I'm detecting a theme in your stuff, Martha - perhaps just a weeee aversion to what we call, on our side of the pond, "Corporate America." (What do you call it on yours?)
martha - June 04, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks for the commentst Re corporate America.. I used to work for a firm that investigated shipping frauds, then progressed to being a regulator in the financial markets (derivatives)... so I have a fairly wide knowledge of the seamier side of the markets ...I am now an academic lawyer teaching courses on financial crime... there is no shortage of material! Doing these parodies has been a way for me to combine doing some gigs with the academic stuff ..( I used to play sax in jazz /rock bands semi pro but gave it up when demands of work/family became to heavy).... now do a couple of satire shows a year just to keep my hand in and basically just for fun

(ABC) Any half-way decent parody of "Stairway to Heaven" puts a grin on my chin - and this one's more than half-way decent! 5's, very cute and clever.

Nice and friendly way to smack the hell out of something and relieve stress. 5's. 'I think I've lost the plot' was my favorite line.

I need to find this fairway! Good song...and I learned about Mark Jonathan Davis

This is perfect. It is not funny actually. It's really too close to real life. But it is a perfect parody.
