The Lyrics

Ooh, Im trying to pay my council rent
Overdue bills money is spent
On some greasy kebabs that make me ill
And on the alcohol booze
Its hard to pay my bills
The landlord said "You must get a job"
Im such a big heavy slob
Don't you know that...

Im living on the breadline
Trying hard to survive this time
Oh Im living on the breadline
Oh and Im just about to see the signI
Stupid council yea.

I know that Im supposed to pay these bills
And a draught through the window-sill
The kids are sprayin' paint on the wall
And a spider in the hall
I must really get a job
I'll think I go and rob
Instead...

Im living on the breadline
Trying hard to survive this time
Oh Im living on the breadline
Oh and Im just about to see the sign
D.H.S.S. yea.

People say that I am a poor tenant
'Cos I can't afford the rent
The bath is so filthy
And the sink is so dirty
I should do some hoovering
And I must do all of my washing
Don't you know...

Im living on the breadline
Trying hard to survive this time
Oh Im living on the breadline
Oh and Im just about to see the sign
Rubbishy flat yea.

Another product of the Bush economy. Here's five job leads. I think one of them is actually still in the U.S.

Not bad Jason. I hope it's not a self-portrait.
Jason - August 09, 2007 - Report this comment
No it isn't Peregrin! I work full time and have my own property. Thanks!

A nice Gaye parody. (Oh... and, uh, Mike P, don't the spelling and terminology suggest the author is in Blair/Brownland 'stead of Bushland?)
McKludge - August 09, 2007 - Report this comment
Some folks in Maine and New Hampshire still use "rubbish" But this parody isn't rubbish. Although "alcohol booze" was kind of a klunker. Is there another kind of booze? 544

more insightful and well-detailed than funny Jason, but quite a good write and a clever idea - 555
Kristof Robertson - August 10, 2007 - Report this comment
Great to see you've got a lot of feedback for this, Jase...as StU said, more well-crafted than LOL funny, but definitely a winner. 555

Thank you TT, McKludge and Stuart!

Also thank you Kristof!

I agree with all the above comments. Good write to a "tougher than you'd think" OS. Including the backing vocals would have been a plus, but a solid job here: this one is a bread winner. 5s. Didn't realize the Department of Health and Social Services exists in Britain, too: I'm a bit surprised I got that one.

Thanks Red Ant! Yea the DHSS does exist in Britian. It is now known as the DSS though, but I found it easier to include the older term DHSS in the parody.

(SOTM) Agreement with Red Ant, and thanks also for his explanation of DHSS. (always a problem for me when I need an explanatory note)

SOTM = Starvation Of The Month?

(SOTM) Could use a little work, but other than that, that was pretty good. Keep em comin'!
Matthias - September 24, 2007 - Report this comment
I agree with the general public on this one, not your best, but not your worst. It was mediocre.
Max Power - September 24, 2007 - Report this comment
Gaye parody
Phil Alexander - September 29, 2007 - Report this comment
Not bad, and really rather good in places, but there were a few lines that I simply couldn't sing along with.

(SOTM) It was funny, but pacing could have been a little tighter. . .Max--Toushee, Toushee--LOL . . .anyhow, Very good Jason, you still have some work, but you are heading in the right direction with regards to your parody writing.
wannabemustangjockey - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
SOTM - I agree that the pacing needs some help. For the most part it's pretty solid.
stuart mcarthur - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) see above - I quite liked this one, Jason, and I thought it held pretty tightly to the OS
Jason - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
Thanks to all of you for your comments, even Max for his weird 'gaye parody' comment.
Kristof Robertson - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) As I said before, Jase: really quite good, and with a bit more polishing could have been a diamond.
Jason - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
And thank you Kristof!
Cat - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) You're getting there, Jason—a few missed chorus lines, but one of your better works.
Ethan Mawyer - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
This is a decent effort definitely a step in the right direction.
Mikey Squirrel - September 30, 2007 - Report this comment
SOTM- Pretty good stuff here, Jason. But I have to agree about the pacing. But definitely not 'poor'. (hehe)
