The Lyrics

...as requested by littleCupCakes...."the grapevine" for those of you not in the southern california area is a pass connecting the los angeles area to bakersfield...it is hardly fun to drive in normal weather and when the weather is bad it is horrible and sometimes even closed down...
ooh...i'm set on wanderin' right on through
i've got plans...to be with you
the mountains are high...they surely soar
the rain that fell from the sky has turned to snow once more

its lookin' winterized...i must say
but i'll still go up today

don't you know that i swerved right through the grapevine
how much higher can a road climb ?
oh...i swerved right through the grapevine
and this flurry's 'bout to leave me blind
snowy, snowy, yeah

i know with this car...i just shouldn't try
but my dear...straight to you, i'll fly
missin' you would cause me misery
cause you mean that much to me

you could have drove down yourself
but i spared you that hell

don't you know that i swerved right through the grapevine
how much higher can a road climb ?
oh...i swerved right through the grapevine
and this flurry's 'bout to leave me blind
snowy, snowy, yeah

people say, proceed slow, better watch your speed
cars get stuck...a lot up here
chains on your tires, you hafta use
if you slue...its hard to steer

its my plan to have a go
i'm a valiant man, i'll have you know

don't you know that i swerved right through the grapevine
how much higher can a road climb ?
oh...i swerved right through the grapevine
and this flurry's 'bout to leave me blind
snowy, snowy, yeah

Grand parody. I've not driven The Grapevine it celebrates but can't imagine its horrors exceed -- regardless the weather -- those of the Comptche-Ukiah Road that connects the PCH near Mendocino with the 101. Our Mendocino innkeeper had recommended that route as a "nice scenic drive, altho' it narrows to one lane in places." The blind curves in alternating morning-sun gare and deep redwood forest dark that characterized its western third were interesting, as were the incessant steep switchbacks of its eastern third, but neither quite so much as what we discovered were the narrowing-to-one-lane segments along the ridge that was it middle third, the most notable being a 100-yard stretch between a cliffwall and a near-sheer dropoff whose lane abutting the latter had, well, dropped off. Only that absolutely no other traffic, oncoming or overtaking, vied for roadspace during that drive keeps it out of contention with some of the rural roads I've explored in Scotland and estern Ireland. :-)

I thought _I_ requested it...~sniff~

Anyway, leave it to Southern Californians to close a major freeway when it snows. Here we even freak out when we have a 'rain event'.

Never had heard of the grapevine before...very well parodied

I thought the original song was a reference to that - in a way. Maybe that will mean more ice wine?

Sir Stan, ~Duke of Halls~ I know the Mendocino road to 101 that you took. Yes, it is difficult through those hills when the sun is low in the sky; But it is a very beautiful drive indeed. My Aunt lived in the next county of Sonoma, and we took that trip many times. The G-Vine is not that way . . . it's boring . . . uphill climb.. . . truck drivers overheated by the side of the road . . . mucho traffic in the Summer through that pass! I'd love to see those Spandex-wearing "Critical Mass" old farts bicycling up that GrapeVine!

Very well done, Alvin. I have done the Grapevine many times, usually in the summer, but I think you accurately and humorously depicted the drive in bad weather.
