The Lyrics

Some wise man, I believe it was Steve Martin, once said that "The French seem to have a different word for everything". My all time favorite song, since early childhood, has been "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", a stirring song of war, depicting the triumph of Christ over Satan, created at a time when one group of Americans waged war on another group of Americans, ostensibly for the freedom of a third group. Leave it to the French to turn this ultimate militant anthem into something 180 degrees in the opposite direction. I found this song at youtube, expressing the ideals of a peaceful world where everyone strives to put an end to war. The title means "Three Billion People on Earth". The population has changed since it was recorded. The line "L'amour est en chemin" (Love is on the way) seemed to me to convey a different meaning in English, so I changed it to something I feel is less ambiguous. This song shows the beauty and universality of music. The same melody can serve more than one cause.
As we lift our eyes to heaven and we fold our hands in prayer
The rising sun illuminates and warms the morning air
We reach out to one another for the dream that we both share
That Love and Peace prevail

Here on earth the population
Kneels in prayer for our salvation
Lord, save us from conflagration
Thy Love and Peace prevail

If we plant the tree of friendship to replace the thorns of hate
If despite our disagreements we can still negotiate
If we simply work together, we'll determine our own fate
When Love and Peace prevail

Men of every race and nation
Back away from confrontation
In a common celebration
As Love and Peace prevail

Arm in arm we'll march together toward the glowing sacred flame
We'll forgive our neighbor's failings and we know he'll do the same
For Humanity's united and this is our single aim
That Love and Peace prevail

War, accursed abomination
Hell shall be thy destination
Evil perish in frustration
As Love and Peace prevail

Men of every rank and station
Formed in holy congregation
Sing in joyous exaltation
"Thy Love and Peace prevail"!

Amen

This video has subtitles with a good, literal translation of the French lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyGORv40KjI The next to last chorus reflects a bit of the militancy of the original American lyrics.
