The Lyrics

GREAT DANE TO BARKSVILLE

Take that Great Dane to Barksville
To a shelter destination
Cause it trashed my whole apartment
And the landlord compensation I now owe
Oh, no no no
Costing me dough!

So I'm taking it tomorrow
For the last trip in my van
One last ripping the upholstery
Won't be mourning that Great Dane that has to go
Oh, no no no
It must be so!
And I don't care if it ever finds a home

Took that Great Dane to Barksville
To that shelter destination
I'll have time to maybe date a woman
Or enjoy a nice vacation, bro!
Oh, yes yes yes
No more big mess!

doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo
doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo
doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo (and more)
doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo
doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo
doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo

Took that Great Dane to Barksville
Bought that monster one last bone
Now the neighborhood can sleep again
That growling hulk is gone
My face can show
A little mo
A little mo!
And I don't care if it ever finds a home

Took that Great Dane to Barksville
Took that Great Dane to Barksville

"Barksville" does sound like a good name for an animal shelter! Some Great Danes are indeed huge: an Air Force co-worker told me about a friend of his who was stationed in England. The houses had a six-foot privacy fence, as the story goes, and one day this friend was grilling when he had a strange feeling. His neighbor's dog was a Great Dane named Brutus--when the man turned around, he saw Brutus looking down on him, with the front paws on top of that privacy fence! Makes me wonder if the dog in this parody was related to Brutus!

I know a guy who somehow gets his Great Dane into gun shows. (I guess the guy at the door is not going to argue with a dog that is taller than he is.). The dog is equipped with saddle bags and carries the fellow's gear around the show. Glad that I don't have to feed the beast. Though sometimes I'm concerned I might be fed to him.

@CML: I'd save that song parody for another time.

I've got something buzzing in my brain already, Darius. My grown up daughter has turned into something of an animal rescuer. She recently acquired a German Shepherd pup that lost a forelimb due to an auto accident (most likely) and I've seen this creature run after tennis balls. Shouldn't be too hard; "I'm a Believer" has been an earworm inside my brain for 50 years ......... A lot of the Monkees music was played for laughs, but they did have some of the best songwriters in the business writing their tunes. "Last Train" is definitely an all time great rock song. Should make anyone's "Top 500" list

CML is right. Who's going to write another parody of "I'm Gonna Buy Me A Dog", also by the Monkees? BTW, I have to confess that when I first saw this parody I thought of Hamlet, or Nels Bohr, or Kierkegaard, or any number of other great Danes!

Sorry, CML and Jonathan. I ain't going to write any Monkees parodies today. Too busy in my life doing other things like Drawception and stuff.

Tiniest gig in Amiright history -- Rick, you shoulda written, "And TO landlord compensation I now owe" because the compensation is owed TO the landlord ..... And here's a mini-lesson to newer parodists. Note how Rick got all Yoda-esque with the sentence structure in order to make his idea fit the rhyme scheme and cadence. You dont have to be restricted to normal English syntax, because song lyrics frequently disregard grammar rules. Just dont do it all the time
