The Lyrics

This is a tribute to an actor who you've seen countless times on countless television shows...but unless you're a trivia fan, I'd be suprised if you can name him. Search for William Schallert and be amazed. The question is not in what shows did he appear but rather in what shows DIDN'T he appear. ;D

I'm watching T.V.,
Then I see familiarly -
It's the face - I can't place.
I've seen him before
In shows more than twenty score.
What a shame. Don't know his name.

He's Patty Duke's dad, Dobie Gillis's teacher.
Never the star, but each time he's a feature.
Hundred times reran.
The Unknown T.V. Man.
Unknown T.V. Man.

He played on Get Smart,
To each part he brought his art.
Carson Drew! That was you!
Subbed on Wild Wild West.
He's the best, never would rest.
New Gidget - darn good fit.

He was in Gunsmoke, Twilight Zone, never quibbles.
He played on Star Trek in "The Trouble With Tribbles".
Anything he can.
The Unknown T.V. Man
Unknown T.V. Man.

(Instrumental break)

Bill Schallert's his name,
He's one versatile actor.
'Though never top-billed, in each show he's a factor,
And I am a fan.
The Unknown T.V. Man.
Unknown T.V. Man.

(What's he doing recently?)
Plugs insurance plan.
Unknown T.V. Man.

William Schallert (born 1922) is still with us, probably filming something as I write this. Yes Trekkies, he was the insufferable Nilz Baris. ;D

Hey, it's that guy! - February 28, 2011 - Report this comment
A search of IMDB shows over 350 credits to this actors massive resume beginning in 1947 and still active in 2010. A lot of his credits are multiple roles in shows like Gunsmoke. It would be easier to catalogue the TV shows he hasn't been in. Nice tribute. 555 cable channels.

Thank you, Hey. He was also the president of the Screen Actor's Guild, followed in office by his T.V. daughter Patti Duke. ;D
