Sorry - thought that doing all of today's six-way smoosh meant that the writing was finished for now. But then *this* just jumped in and started writing itself -- you know how *that* goes, right? -- and the homage is that among all six OS done today, this is TT's fave, for its bright, up-tempo, uplifting bounce. (OS video, title incorrect).

[1] Petula Clark recorded and performed in multiple languages while touring internationally, e. g., doing her songs in both English and German in live concerts in Germany, to screaming, adoring fans. Her signature song, "Downtown", was recorded in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. British songwriter Tony Hatch, born in Pinner, North London, said it was actually inspired by his visit to New York City.
Hatch wrote TOS "My Love" while flying from London to Los Angeles, where he had a scheduled recording session with Clark. Originally, Hatch had been occupied during the flight putting the finishing touches on another song: "The Life and Soul of the Party," which was to be Clark's next single. However, in casual conversation with the American sitting next to him, Hatch was advised that this song would be meaningless to the American public (*always* a cross-Pond issue here, LOL -- TT ;). Hatch proceeded to write a song whose title - "My Love" - could not conceivably present any comprehension issue. The lyrics were completed on the plane, and Hatch wrote the music soon after landing. In February 1966, "My Love" became Clark's second single to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Clark the first British female to have two US #1 hits.
"My Love" was recorded in French, German, and Italian (the order of translations of "love" in the verse referred to here -- all German nouns are capitalized; hence "Liebe"), though not Spanish, AFAIK -- hence, only "four-way love", including English (vs. five for "Downtown"). It was also a #1 hit in Canada, a hit in Australia (#4), New Zealand (#6), Rhodesia (#1), South Africa (#6), and reached #13 in both the Netherlands and the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium. In Germany, "My Love" became a hit *first* in its original English version (#13), and then again when rendered in German. It, too, was also a hit in French and Italian. ... Is she good, or what?

You capture the fun of writing these songs, and the joy they bring to your readers. Not everyone I meet in person cares for some of the stuff I write. But the folks at AIR don't have to put up with my singing voice, such as it is. Not long ago I used my French language skills to track down a rare 45 rpm of Petula Clark singing "La Colline au Whisky". Which she later performed as "On the Path of Glory" in a famous duet with Harry Belafonte. Unfortunately, I cannot decipher all the lyrics, except, again, to tell it's not the same song in French.
All these GREAT smooshes, and all I can "smoosh" together are three fives...LOL!

Patrick: Most things don't translate exactly across languages ... "Volare", by Domenico Modugno, was the only US #1 hit sung entirely in a foreign language (Italian). Bobby Rydell did an English version that was only vaguely related to the original lyrics and their meaning. Dean Martin combined bits of both, Ital and English. TT parodied it, with further commentary and a link to his own translation (not easy when one doesn't speak the language) here:

(yes, you may have that title switch - "Till There Was You".) Not all friends, family, etc. are into such things, so the Internet makes it possible to share them with those around the globe who are also into song parody.

To paraphrase JAB, you've put a 'hex' on smoosh! Love the things you did with this melody and the sextet in general. Fav line has to be: "His mind is twisted; czome czee czatire czar, Who leaves readers oft perplexed"! Who but ewe would come up twith that gem!
