Song Parodies -> "Leonard Played Spock"

Original Song Title:

"I Am A Rock"

Original Performer:

Simon and Garfunkel

Parody Song Title:

"Leonard Played Spock"

Parody Written by:

The Comedian

The Lyrics

Leonard Nimoy
He's a deep and thoughtful actor
He became known
Wearing stupid costumes
On a stupid show
Even though he could play Shakespearian roles
Leonard played Spock
(I can't rhyme iiiiiiiiisland)

( brief instrumental )

He wore ears
Foam rubber soft and pointy
That Leonard came to hate
The Trekkies, they would stalk him
Beg for autographs
He'd raise his eyebrow - that would make them laugh
Leonard played Spock
(Spock's not from Thailand)

( brief instrumental )

"Don't talk of Spock!"
Leonard said, pissed-off and sore
He got sick of being type-cast
He wanted to forget all of Star Trek's campiness
So he wrote a book and it's title was this:
"I Am Not Spock"
(I can't rhyme iiiiiiiiisland)

( brief instrumental )

Then the movies
Based on Star Trek made Leonard wealthy
He thought maybe Spock ain't so bad
He picked up his pen
Wrote another book
About how he gave Spock a second look,
Called "I Am Spock"
(Not Staten Island)

( brief instrumental )

Mr. Spock feels no pain
And an island's hard to rhyme

( instrumental )

Hehehe...let's try to rhyme island..."smilin'"..."I land"..."my land"..."sighin'"..."eyelid" ? Good job though :)

That was awesome. At first I was like, what's up with the inability to rhyme island? Then I looked in a rhyming dictionary - it *is* hard to rhyme island. The only word that isn't ludicrously archaic is highland. And that gimmick you used gets funnier each repetition. A well-deserved 5/5/5.

This parody seems logical but quite irregular.

My name is Spock,
My homeworld's a dry land.

Here's one you could have used, but I agree with neminem, I like your gimmick.

This land is my land, I'm in a guy band, I work at "Fry" land, where employees I canned,

Spock, get ahold of yourself! You're Spock, You're Vulcan. This is not the Pon Farr. Bones, help him.

Thank you all, Rice Cube, neminem, Guy, Rick, Mari, and assorted Star Fleet personnel !

And thanks, also, for all of the ideas for rhyming "island" - now I can refer back to these comments if I'm ever stuck on that rhyme again!

Mari - Are'nj-a as in - aren't ya gonna gimme an orange? Or warn-je as in - I warn-ja about that.
Millard - December 14, 2003 - Report this comment
Good parody. I am not quite as amused as other readers by the gimmick, and an extra apostrophe slipped by your near perfect quality control team. I think you know better, so a refresher course in Phil Alexander's apostrophe parodies is probably not necessary.

Very good. And I think we are aloud, say, .05% no-rhyme available jokes and Johnny is well under his quota.

Thank you, Millard. It is a real treat to get an in-depth and constructively critical comment from someone I have not communicated with before - I appreciate your thoughtful input.

I could have rhymed " island " if I wanted to talk about dry land, or my land, etcetera, but when I came up with the " gimmick " as everybody seems to like to call it ( and that's OK with me ), I personally actually laughed out loud - so in it went, and whatever others may think about it is OK by me - it made ME chuckle, and that's one of the chief reasons I bother to write parodies in the first place! Thanks again for everybody's comments.

Thanks Leah - yes, if you look over my 104 posted parodies, you will find almost no usage of "Gee-I-can't-rhyme-such-and-such-a-word-ha-ha-see-how-funny-that-is" gimmickry. But like I said in my response to Millard - if a gimmick like a "I can't rhyme _______ " makes me laugh, puts a smile on my face, and feels humorously appropriate to me, well......no offense anyone, but that's good enough for me!
Phil Alexander - December 15, 2003 - Report this comment
Must admit, JD, I don't particularly like the "Can't find a rhyme" comment as part of the lyric, it only works in a song that's so well-known you're always trying to rhyme the original line.. but even though it is a bit of a cop-out, I think it works in this one (i.e. it made me grin, too)... Must admit, my GWB parody to this tune wasn't submitted because Will got in there just ahead of me, and I hate jumping in on someone else's coattails... but the punchline of the war-against-terror song was "He'll bomb Iraq/He will bomb Ireland", which still makes me smile :-)

Live long and prosper

Phil - point taken, OK, and as you can see from the comments up above, you're not alone. Thanks for your vote and your in-depth, thoughtful comment.

Peace and long life.

A Classic, Johnny! Think you get get William Shatner to sing it?
Johnny D - December 15, 2003 - Report this comment
Thanks David ! Bill Shatner? Sing this? Saaaaayyy.....I think you're onto something there......or are you on something there? Either way, intriguing idea...... ;-D

Johnny D - December 15, 2003 - Report this comment
Thank you, Adagio! Yes, I profited greatly from my fellow writers' clever ideas for future rhymes of "island" !
Adam - November 03, 2010 - Report this comment
You are missing the obvious rhyme! Vulcan rhymes with island, at least close enough when island is pronounced eye-lan, which is how they sing it in the song. And you can afford to shift the sound a bit, because it doesn't have to match up with any other verses. so for instance: "Mr. Spock feels no pain, and a Vulcan never cries"
