Song Parodies -> "What Rhymes With Orange?"

Original Song Title:

"The Sound of Silence"

Original Performer:

Simon and Garfunkel

Parody Song Title:

"What Rhymes With Orange?"

Parody Written by:

Red Ant

The Lyrics

All words in quotes are the closest misrhymes I could think of and fit into the parody.
Forget "door hinge", poet's friend
I need a rhyme and words will bend!
I'm on a mission that's so fruity
But I feel that it's my duty
As an author,
So perfection is attained
Rack my brains

But nothing rhymes - with orange!

A wicked dream I thought "garage"
With no N that's a "mirage"
Then I came up with a "horse syringe"
So big it would make a junky "whore cringe"!
And my mind was grabbed,
By thought of a perfect rhyme
I'll never find

'cause nothing rhymes - with orange!

And in the dead of night I coughed
I took a "lozenge" that I bought
I got hungry and ate "porridge"
How'd that wind up in my "storage"?
And I pondered on,
That word is surely there
(But) where o where?

I seek a rhyme - with orange!

Waste of time well this I know
At least I'm "original"!
Search for words not a "bor-ing" one
Even check for the "for-eign" ones
But my search,
Not going all that well

Takes "courage" - to find rhymes - with orange!

Not a perfect rhyme is found
I thought orange won this round
But I noticed that while writing
Sound of Silence is free-rhyming*
By design it allows orange to be,
So written to not rhyme at all
My mission recalled

(To) Hell with - finding rhymes -
- with orange!

Only two I've heard:
RR whels were painted orange
But they jumped the track - had poor flange

Alas, the lonely orange
It sits all day in storange

Fives for having the guts to tackle the "squaring the circle" of poetry.

Thanks Alvin, John, Pat, Matthias, Step-chan, PMS, Kristof, MasonR, Michael, Tommy Turtle, AFW and Larry.

The line "By thought of a perfect rhyme" should read "By the thought of a perfect rhyme". Now that that's out of the way...

Alvin: No perfect rhymes with those either, and there are probably even fewer near rhymes for those words.

John: Maybe a interior designer with a kayaking hobby could use that in a parody! I did consider "orphan" but ended up canning it.

Kristof: I appreciate that, though when it comes to using English properly I am "incorrigible". ;-)

Mason R: I tried to get that old knock-knock joke worked in but it hard too many syllables to scan. To answer your question: yes, I am. Your comment and the others are very "encouraging".

Michael: "Forage" was also on my brainstorm list, it too wound up not getting used.

TT: Never heard those, they are a bit stretched. I hope there are no "more in jest".

AFW: That's creative - if she was a red-head you didn't like you might call her a "morange". Yep, a perfect rhyme exists with orange, though it is slang and from what I gathered fairly derrogatory.

DKTOS, but the title made me had to look. As far as I know, there are four words that have no rhyme: orange (duh), silver, purple and month.

all your trademarks here, Antman (nod there to Kristof) - out-there idea, lateral, and diligently executed - great stuff - and (continuing AFW's line) if Ange was really hungry after a stretch on the cheap tanning machines, and you took her to a Mexican restaurant where they knew you so well you only had to say "ench" to indicate a desire for multiple enchiladas, you could order "4 ench for orange Ange" - 555

Oranges...\o/. I had a somewhat rhyme, but it really didn't fit. Something like "orangya (aren't you).. You'll have people wracking their brains on this one a while.

Apparently we have been doing research on the same sites lately, though I settled for a shorter and less know OS:

Thanks bobpiecheese, Phil, Stu, Peter, Luke and Luke.

bobpiecheese: There are about fourteen single-syllable words in English that have no perfect rhymes, I can't remember them all but "angst" and "ninth" are two of them.

Phil, I had to look that one up. Archaic and obscure, but apparently there are about 15 rhymes with orange, most were proper or made-up names falling into the archaic and obscure category as well.

Stu: Lol on the continued line, which would make an interesting "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer" parody if you wanted to. Good to see you back.

Pat: "Aren't you" is close but a broken rhyme. Most of what I listed in quotes were either broken or half-rhymes.

Peter: I'll check out yours in a minute.

Luke (x2): I'll give your thread a look-see in a bit as well. As for turquoise and aquamarine, no need to find rhymes for them really for songs like this one.

Thanks to Aggy, poo, Max, Johnny D, Michael, Kristof, Charnstar, Rick, Stu, Matthias and Cat!

MM: I failed spectacularly in Spanish, but I'll take a stab at it: "more ganja", "or launch a"... okay, back to you. ;)

Rick: Two words to make a rhyme is fine no matter what rhymezone says, heh heh.

Stu: Whatever it was, Austrailia needs to export it here!

Cat: "Door hinge" is the ubiquitous poet's rhyme with "orange". I had to push the concept as far as I could... or did I? ;)

Before I get off for a good while, great parody. Although, bobpiecheese, you can rhyme with "month" - just not a real word. Have a small child, who just automatically thinks "th" goes after each number, say "oneth" instead of first. That's how little kids do somethimes, overgeneralizing a rule they think they've picked up. (Like putting "-ed" after every past tense verse - so runned, flied, etc.). Sadly, nothing like this can be done with orange.
Red Ant - May 06, 2008 - Report this comment
Thanks Jeff and Doug. Doug - "month" has no real word rhymes, but I'd argue "months" rhymes with "once". . .

Ha! That darn orange, frustrating poets for centuries! Very clever collection of near-rhymes; I think "horse syringe" is my favorite. Great take on one of my favorite songs!
