The Lyrics

As an old-school feminist and NOW member, I can't help but be happy that there's finally a Speaker-elect who's literally nutless, instead of...well, you know. I just wish that I felt like having a woman Speaker would make a difference. The first promise she made was not to impeach. Silly me, thinking the election was some sort of mandate for change...
Speaker Pelosi, GOP defeat
Now's the time for changes, let's start this week!
Finally, a woman - two heartbeats away
Didn't think that I would live to see the day

Think you're gonna start the healing, do you?
Here's the time to practice what we preach
Justice is a San Francisco value
Might we impeach?

Speaker Pelosi, nation is impressed
Hopes a woman Speaker can clean the mess

(Here Bill Clinton breaks into a smoking hot sax solo, and is joined by a group of painfully relieved Congressional pages on kazoo)

Make me believe!

Speaker Pelosi, let us call the tune
I hope that I still admire you come next June

It's your time to grab the reins and go, girl
There's no telling what you could acheive
Don't you just maintain the status quo, girl
Make me believe!

Speaker Pelosi, GOP defeat
Now's the time for changes, let's start this week!

Ravyn - Very well done. 5's. So happens I've written a piece about Pelosi's ascension (different OS, of course), but it's been sitting because I haven't been able to quite decide on a couple lines where I have 2 possibilities that I like... Just so you know, it's not just women who were enthused. I think this is something that was WAY past due to occur. Now as to your concerns about Pelosi not going right at the President's throat, well, while he deserves it, I think it's important to remember that as leader of her Party in the House she's got to try and keep them on the same page, and there's just too many newly elected Democrats from districts that would not necessarily support an immediate impeachment. She would, in effort, be hanging those "newbies" out to dry...if they go with her they might have their home district situation compromised. You can consider this cynical if you like, but this is gonna be important...in two years they need to run again...and if compromised, well, good-bye majority status...and we're back where we were between 2001-2006 maybe...don't know about you, but I didn't care for it. I would prefer the Democrats not make it easy for the Republicans to take back control of the House. Does that mean "No progressive agenda"? I hope not, and I don't think that will be the case. But will we all get all our wishes right away? No, we won't...and we wouldn't even if Pelosi pushed all of them right away...there's always the filibuster and Pres. veto, you know. At the start, at least, she should want to make sure that if she gets bills vetoed that they be ones that most Americans would want passed. After all, the Republicans are going to try and paint her as an extreme radical...something that I just do not see from the record...is she progressive and left-of-center? Yes. But I don't see anything remotely radical in her statements or voting record. One thing I do expect now are some changes and better legislation - and better behaviour, too. There's a whole lot riding on doing this right, and I'm not just talking about "Party priorities" here...the nation's future hangs in the balance. I'd love to see Bush thrown out...hell, I'd love to see him in locked up into those old "stocks" for a couple months so people could taunt and throw rotten fruit at that c*cksucker, but there are really more important things to address than just dealing him his ultimate just desserts.

As you point out, she literally has no pelotas, but she appears to have principles, unlike the pedophilia-facilitating tub of lard she replaces.

Iis it Pel-OH-si, or Pel-AH-si...anyway, the parody is glossy

Let's see, since Tip (Santa Claus) O'Neill retired, we've had the wishy-washy Jim Wright, the dead-man-walking Tom Foley, Uncle Scrooge Gingrich, King Hypocrite Livingston, DeFacto DeLay the DeStroyer, and Dennis Has-been-tert. Not exactly tough acts for Lady P to follow. I'm glad I had the chance to Reid this parody. Now let's see if she can lift us Hoyer and Hoyer. 'Cause they say this chick Nancy is a bad Murtha (Shut your mouth!)

Thanks to all! Paul - I wish I had the time to address your comments at length, but I'm posting from work. Hopefully that will change by the end of the week, but until then, thank you for responding so thoughtfully to something I took 15 minutes to write! I certainly do realize that Madame Speaker (damn, that looks good!) isn't going to jeopardize her new position or Congress' new majority any time soon, but I think it was a tactical error to categorically reject impeachment right off the bat. Consider that Congress' approval rating is even lower than Bush's, that the general consensus of opinion is that the election was a mandate for change, and that we were brought into the Iraq quagmire by less than ethical means (to put it delicately). Do the Dems really want to look like they're willing to sweep that all under the rug and "let the healing begin"? How all this ends remains to be seen, but I'm reserving final judgment until I see how the promised investigations into various GOP corruptions go.

And now for the rest of you! Alvin: thank you! Hmm..."I Dig Pelosi" to "I Dig a Pony"? (Whoever wants that, take it!) John: yes! she has no pelotas...no tiene pelotas, ole! AFW: It's Pel-OH-see. Madame Speaker if you're nasty. Michael: wow. Speaker puns. That's hot. Susanna: thanks for singing!

Ravyn, if she was sure that she could get the vote count that would be one thing to put it up. If she brought it up and DIDN'T, well, you might be looking at another speaker. I fully agree about the Iraq mess, and that would be the main grounds for an impeachment - although there are certainly other examples of malfeasance lying around all over the place (Energy policy, FEMA-Katrina...the list goes on & on). I think maybe looking into the other corruptions is where things should start...but what do I know? At least we have a Congress now that MIGHT possibly start looking out for our real interests & well-being. There was absolutely no chance of that before Nov. 7th.

Paul - Agreed. There is hope where there once was none, but I'm an old Progressive who's had my ideals outraged more times than I care to count. My expectations aren't as high as I'd like them to be. Hope, however, springs eternal.
