Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

You know it's bad when the price goes up 10 cents a gallon while you're standing at the pump.
In the time when I was born
All the cars were big machines
‘Cause it didn’t cost a lot
For a tank of gasoline

So we drove across the land
Far and fast – it was routine
But the times have seen a change
In the price of gasoline

Can’t believe what I pay for gasoline
Pay for gasoline, pay for gasoline
Prices jump like they’re on a trampoline
On a trampoline, on a trampoline

Now I hate to drive my truck
Every block I go costs a buck
Need a loan to fill my tank

Can’t believe what I pay for gasoline
Pay for gasoline, pay for gasoline
Prices scaring me more than halloween
More than halloween, more than halloween

[Full speed ahead, Cap'n Hazelwood, full speed ahead!
Have another drink, sir!
Action station! Action station!
Aye, aye, sir, spill!
Penguins! Penguins!]

And the oil companies (the companies)
Grab our pocketbooks (grab our pocketbooks) and start to squeeze (and start to squeeze)
Need to raid (need to raid) a cash machine (a cash machine)
Just to pay for (just to pay for) gasoline (gasoline, oh crap!)

Can’t believe what I pay for gasoline
Pay for gasoline, pay for gasoline
Fossil fuel coming from the pliocene
From the pliocene, from the pliocene
Can’t believe what I pay for gasoline
Pay for gasoline, pay for gasoline
“Fritz the Cat” wasn’t nearly this obscene
Nearly this obscene, nearly this obscene

Excellent job with a potentially inflamatory subject... sings itself!
Stooge - July 18, 2007 - Report this comment
Nice one! And very singable.

This parody was a gas! And extra credit for mentioning Joe Hazelwood, the captain of the Exxon Valdez. (Hang on a second: "The Wreck of Valdez, Ship of Exxon?" Could that be on its way?) Of course, while this was a well-fueled parody, the all-time high-gas-prices parody remains "Pay THIS For Gasoline, Man?" by Johnny D. How about this: The security code was 96L. In Canada, that could mean "96 cents a litre." That would be $2.64 a gallon, which would, at the moment, be a big improvement!

Amen to this one, Rex...it's so sad that I'm relieved that we've gone "down" to 2.96 a gallon right now.
alvin - July 18, 2007 - Report this comment

Meanwhile, Exxon-Mobile posts all-time record high profits, and their CEO gets hundreds of millions in bonuses and retirement benefits. Great job! ( and the Exxon-Valdez aside was priceless!) Three 5's

Loved the Hazlewood interlude.
Matthias - July 18, 2007 - Report this comment
Looks like you have some Exxon employees 1-ing you on this one, but since I'm not an Exxon employee my score for you is the same as the price gas will soon be 5.55

Ravyn - thanks! TJC - thanks, and don't light a match. Stooge - Nice comment! Michael - Thanks for bringing up JD's parody. I had intended to mention it in the footnotes but forgot. Arwen - And to think I can remember saying that I might stop driving if the price of a gallon ever got over a dollar. alvin - appreciate it. Ann - always appreciate the laughter. Beatlejuice - nice name. I was wondering who would make the connection to the Hazelwood name. John - and I knew you would make the connection. Matthias - the one's guy hasn't visited me for awhile, so I guess he's making up for it today. Place your bets now on when we'll see 5.55 on a gas station sign. stuart - thanks. I don't know how many of the younger generation will know about Felix, but being the gracefully aging fella that I am, I thought I'd throw it in.
Jonathan - July 18, 2007 - Report this comment
okay lets see 1 gallon of gas that will be $5.55!
John Jenkins - July 18, 2007 - Report this comment
Oil companies work a lot harder and make a lot less per gallon than governments do on gasoline taxes, but this is an excellent spoof with clever references.
Red Ant - July 19, 2007 - Report this comment
10 *11 votes?! Someone must hate the cost a gas a lot more than we thought. Great rhymes and funny.
bobpiecheese - July 19, 2007 - Report this comment
What kinda morons 111'd this masterpiece? This is one of the few Beatles songs I know off by heart, and you spoofed it expertly!
Rex - July 19, 2007 - Report this comment
Jonathan - thanks! John - no diatribe against the oil companies here, just one about what I have to pay. Red Ant - I think the 1's guy was just trying to make my score equal the price of a gallon. :-) bobpie - stop by anytime with your "masterpiece" comments. :-)
Agrimorfee - July 19, 2007 - Report this comment
Bring up those 1's to ChuckyG, Rex...you must have pissed off someone badly. Sad. But on your parody, this was expert! Yours is the only YS parody that also spoofed the weird dialogue in the middle.
