Song Parodies -> "Festivus"

Original Song Title:

"Yesterday"

Original Performer:

The Beatles

Parody Song Title:

"Festivus"

Parody Written by:

Gianni Parmesiani

The Lyrics

I know some will find another "Yesterday"parody tiresome, but I haven't written one before and this came to mind. For those not "in the know", in a Seinfeld episode called "The Strike", George Costanza's dad Frank has created a new holiday called Festivus (to replace the glitz and greed of Christmas, Hannukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.) with very specific rituals.
Festivus
A holiday for the rest of us
No monetary gift giving fuss
Oh, thank you, Frank, for Festivus

Feats of Strength
George tries to avoid at any length
He's just not on his father's wave-length
Oh, George avoids those feats of strength

The pole
Is so plain, can't refrain, George has to cuss
He says,
"Can't take it. I won't sit for Festivus!"

Grievances
Airing them is taking big chances
Self-esteem Frank says it enhances
Yes, Festivus airs grievances

Kramer,
Still on strike, comes to like the holiday
He says,
"Frank, that's great. I can't wait to come and play!"

Festivus
A holiday for the rest of us
And The Human Fund donation fuss
Oh, thank you, Frank, for Festivus

Hey, GP, not bad--555! I've read your stuff before, and you are pretty good. Why not join in the Amiright Idol parody writing contest, hosted by Below Average Dave, Red Ant and yours truly?
See http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=32272.0 for details (deadline for entry, June 3!)

No grievances to air here. In fact, this might be the first Festivus parody posted on the site, which is worth a five in itself.

I got a lot of problems with you people! But no problems with this parody.

It's not the first one, Mike. I did one back in December

Thanks alot, guys. I was a little worried about his one because I felt I rushed it. Your positives are like a Festivus Miracle! As for the contests, I'm not sure of my confidence level nor how to actually go about them. I'll give it some thought. Thanks again and spread the word about my other works.

I know it's easy for someone else to say, but don't worry about the confidence thing. I wasn't sure about entering my first contest either, but I figured that when well respected regular submitters suggest you give it a try, that means they see something worthwhile.

In that case, thanks, I'll give it a try, but I'm still not quite sure of the process invovled. I'll have to look into it.

(Amiright Idol) This was fun. I especially liked how you changed every line and word, with a continuing storyline of sorts. When writing a parody on a pop culture item, try to write for everyone in the audience. I for one, know about the Festivus episode, but I didn't get the last line...others might not know about it, or Seinfeld, at all. Thanks for entering, and Good Luck!

Thanks, Agrimorfee. Just for your edification, and mine, "The Human Fund" was a charity that George made up. As Christmas presents, he would donate money to the charity in others' names, thus avoiding having to actually spend any money on gifts. As always, he was eventually found out.

(AmIRight Idol) To show the opposite, I have no idea what this song was about. I am sorry, but not being familiar with the topic I can't say that I found this terribly funny. The OS is an easy one to record, recognized by virtually everyone and is almost guaranteed to be recognized--however with such a song comes a challenge too--being over the top with a song like "Yesterday" or "Hey There Delilah" is very hard because so many people have done either full or mini parodies of them. One thing I advise is broader topics, however picking songs that were as big a hit as this one bodes well for a competition about recording.
Red Ant - June 14, 2008 - Report this comment
(Idol) Well rhymed, especially catching the internal rhymes in the refrain, though I'm have to admit I'm also unfamiliar with the topic.

Switiching from the masculine rhyming (stresses falling on the last syllable) of the original to feminine rhyming (stresses on the penultimate, or second to last, syllable) in the third verse would make this very tricky to record. It may not be that big a deal here, but with many other songs having unnaturally stressed words, especially at the end of a line, makes good recordings very difficult if not impossible. I didn't dock you on the pacing here, though it's something to keep in mind for your next entry.

I found this using the random button. I understand the subject matter, Gianni, and thought you summed it up pretty well :) It's Festivus for the rest of us!!!
