Parody Song Title:

"Dr. Pepper Don't Contain No Prunes"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

This parody is about the fact that the popular American soft drink Dr. Pepper does not contain prunes, contrary to popular belief. I was told that Dr. Pepper contained prunes repeatedly as a child, only to find out that the claim of dried plums as an ingredient of my favorite soft drink was an old wives' tale, or an urban legend if you prefer. Legendary informercial pitchman Billy Mays makes a cameo appearance. This parody invoked thoughts of old circus sideshows in which quack remedies were sold with boastful and false claims in my mind when I proofread it, and I hope it does so in those of everyone who reads and/or sings it.
‘Twas a hundred years ago or more
Dr. Pepper was a brand-new drink
It’s been going in and out of style
But its sales make ol’ Midas smile
So may I introduce to you
A fact never known all these years
Dr. Pepper don’t contain no prunes!

Yeah, Dr. Pepper don’t contain no prunes
We hope you look it up online
Yeah, Dr. Pepper don’t contain no prunes
Sit back and quaff that drink so fine
Dr. Pepper’s tasty, got 23 flavors
But Dr. Pepper don’t contain no prunes!

It's wonderful to drink it
So bubbly and sweet
What a lovely audience
We'd like to send some home with you
We’ll send you a half case

And now I’m gonna stop the show
And I thought that you might like to know
Dr. Pepper’s not made with prunes
So it won’t loosen up your stool
So let me introduce to you
The one and only Billy Mays
He’s handin’ out free Dr. Pepper cans!

Dr. Pepper rocks! So does this parody. Q: if it did contain prunes, would they have named it Dr. Pooper?

Grab your COKE, don't forget your TAB; but leave your RED BULL, just leave it on your shoulder. SPRITE's so sweet on the PEPSI side of the street! Used to chug GATORADE with Mtn DEW in the shade . . .

To get back to I'm A Pepper Too's comment, even if Dr. Pepper really did contain prunes, they wouldn't call it "Dr. Pooper" since that would make the sales of the drink equivalent to those of, say, Betamax videotape players or manual typewriters, in other words, nonexistent. However, I have experienced gastric discomfort from drinking the caffeine-free, sugar-sweetened variety of Dr. Pepper, and said discomfort included diarrhea.

This was great! I like Dr Pepper but more of a Red Bull fan myself. 555s all round.
Andria - June 09, 2009 - Report this comment
Thanks, Jason. Red Bull is pretty good too, and you should try the new cola version if and when it comes to the UK, that is, if it's not there already.

I like Earl Grey too, 2Eagle. Thanks for the vote and comment.

I grew up hearing the rumors and avoided the drink for that reason. Now I try to avoid all carbonated sodas. By the time I could tell Coke and Pepsi apart by taste, I couldn't drink either one. Andria, what's wrong with manual typewriters?
Andria - June 09, 2009 - Report this comment
Thanks for the comment, Patrick. There's nothing really wrong with manual typewriters persay, but I equated the sales of them with something that had an unappetizing name, thus implying that almost nobody would buy Dr. Pooper (except possibly as a joke), just like almost nobody (save technological Luddites, eccentrics, collectors and perhaps the Amish) buys manual typewriters anymore thanks to the invention of the personal computer in IBM-compatible, Linux and Mac formats. For the record, I own a circa-1926 Underwood office typewriter that is used mostly for decorative purposes thanks to a lack of suitable ribbon.

So Andria...what are the chances of getting Billy Mays' part of this, aka "With a Little Help (not from prunes)"?
Andria - June 10, 2009 - Report this comment
Very good, Wufpakgrl. I'm working on it as a matter of fact. Thanks for the vote and comment.
Andria - June 11, 2009 - Report this comment
To Wufpakgrl and all others interested, the "Billy Mays" parody of "With A Little Help From My Friends", titled "Dr. Pepper, A Drink Without Prunes" will appear here when Chucky G next updates parody lyrics, along with another, albeit unrelated, parody.
