The Lyrics

The second installment of my President's Day salute to underappreciated Presidents is about my favorite. George Herbert Walker Bush (not to be confused with his son!) deserves a song - if not a better fate! ;D

Born in New England in 'twenty -four,
G.O.P. from birth.
Father's future job gave him big shoes to fill -
Senator on Capitol Hill.
Studied at Yale and worked very hard,
Not just there for fun,
Did what he should, man - he was a good man.
George Bush Forty-One.

Flew a plane, fought in World War Two,
The Japs shot him down.
Sub came by in the nick of time
So he didn't drown!

Married his sweetheart, finished his school,
Moved to Texas, then
Got into the oil business - in a short while
Made some money - made him a pile.
Two terms in Congress, ran many times,
Lost more than he won.
Then came his missions - appointed positions.
George Bush Forty- One!

Was U.N. Ambassador, then chairman of the R.N.C. during Watergate.
Fair play was his way.
Envoy to China, finally
Head of C.I.A.

Ran for the White House, then he became
Reagan's fine V.P.
In 'eighty-four they carried almost every state,
Won the top job in 'eighty-eight!
The Berlin Wall and Iron Curtain came down.
The Cold War was won!
He led the nation in celebration.
George Bush Forty-One!

When Saddam overran Kuwait
Bush turned to the world.
All joined hands to defeat Hussein -
Freedom's flags unfurled!

But the economy tanked and George
Lost - well, second place.
Clinton was a charmer and a better show,
Bush votes were sapped by Ross Perot.
Now in retirement, he's loved again,
Much more than his son.
He's never jiving! He's still skydiving!
George Bush Forty-One!

Read my lips! No more career-destroying promises! ;D

The sad part is, everything conservatives hated about the father -- compromising with Congressional Democrats, raising taxes, not caving in to the religious right, not going on to Baghdad and becoming an occupying power -- the son did the opposite, and ended up looking more like George Costanza than George Herbert Walker Bush. The father doesn't look nearly as bad as he once did. Of course, he knew when to tell Dick Cheney to put a sock in it.

Great job, funny, and a great telling of GHWB's story. 555 barrels of light sweet crude straight from Iraq.

Yeah, he was a good president, unlike his son. 5's

Isn't it strange that "PT-109" became a highly-romanticized movie, but no one made movies of GH Bush being shot down, or of John McCain being a POW for 4 1/2 years? ... Joseph P. K. Sr. had contacts in Hollywood, including a few starlets.....

555, but are you trying to catch up to John Barry, or what? (Just a personal thing about crowding out others on the home page, and "imposing" too much on loyal fans, vs. two or, once in a while, max of three/day here -- only done three twice, I think. It's your show, though.)

Thanks all. TT, funny you should say that. Ive noticed those immediately ahead and behind of me are submitting again. I have coined an anology of throwing a cherry bomb into a hornet's nest! ;D

Nice write, even though he was not a fave of mine. Neither was that Japanese minister a fan of George Herbert

The 20th was a century like any other....except OMR was there (the whole time)! A thorough tribute, accurate except that he may not have sky-dived since age 80, too busy serving as ambassador to disasters.

Read my lips....you'll get nothing but 3 sets of 5's!!
