The Lyrics

My nephew is back from tour in Afghanistan for a short while and has told me that I.E.D.s (Improvised Explosive Devices) are STILL the main fear of the US Army troops that patrol the nation and fight terrorists. I asked him where the new Buffalos and Cougar vehicles were and he has never seen either! The Germans offered to sell the US Army their GEFAS anti-mine vehicle with EM detonator for electronically detonated I.E.D.s and they refused! America just had to build some huge domestic machine that is few in numbers instead. The German machine can pre-detonate some types of I.E.D.s and also is reinforced up front to take an I.E.D. while the driver and crew is safe rearward- it looks like a modern "stretched" WW2 SdKfz 251. The Buffalo and Cougars are huge beasts you never hear about... insane... See comparisons below.
When I find myself in line of trouble
My .50 cal keeps firing
Fighting our enemies, I.E.D.s
And in this land of darkness
They are buried right in front of me
Hummer is in danger, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
Hummer is in danger, I.E.D.s

And when these heart-hardened people
Try to crowd us in the streets
They fire back in anger, RPGs
For though we may be targets
We must defend frail democracy
Fighting our enemies, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
Convoy is in danger, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
Fighting our enemies, I.E.D.s

I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
Are buried deep, are buried deep
We are all in danger, I.E.D.s
And when the fight is ugly
Only one thing puts the fear in me
Decoys that lay shallow, I.E.D.s
I wake up to the sound of mortars
My .50 cal keeps firing
Fighting our enemies, I.E.D.s
Crude I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, and RPGs
Oh there should be an answer, easily
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, and RPGs
Oh there should be an answer, but costly
I.E.D.s, I.E.D.s
I.E.D.s, and RPGs
Buffalo and Cougar, no one sees

.50 cals come in handy

Yeah Ann the M-2 is still handy, but I'd rather have a German MG-3 anyday if my life depended on it. My nephew (one of three serving in the US Army overseas) says he hates the M-4 and most US weapons. New US weapons like the AA-12 auto-shotgun with airburst shells and the .45 cal Kriss SMG are ignored, so too the German-US XM-8 that Congress killed in 2006 due to bailing out Colt again. Germans responded with 5.56mm HK-416 and 7.62mm HK-417 but still the US fights on with crappy weapons. Hummers are still everywhere and my nephew has never seen any Buffalo or Cougar anywhere near an I.E.D. in Afghanistan. Shame...
