The Lyrics

I could literally write a small pamphlet about the history of the SR-71 in milspeak, but that would just take up too much space... so I'll tell you some things generally not known about the Habu: airframe stressed for Mach 4 flight, stellar and inertial linkage for precise navigation (pre-Sat), max speed sustained Mach 3.4 (at 3.5 engines degrade, faster and the engines would come apart and blow), max height avg= 84,000 ft, max est. ceiling 102,000 ft (some experts claim between 100-120,000 ft), airframe 90% titanium, tanks only seal at 2000 mph (they leak on the ground), special tankers required for operations due to special high flash fuel, pilot and RSO wore spacesuits similar to shuttle crews, and the vertical tails were canted slightly inward to deflect radar (although not required)... so it had some stealth! Also, there was a plan to build a faster delta version, but was denied due to budget constriants (32 Habus were enough).
Blackbird soaring to amazing heights
At speeds approaching Mach 3.5
Quite a ride
Fastest and highest flying bird with recon eyes

Blackbird flying faster than a missile’s flight
Scanning targets of the enemy
Eagle’s sight
Could read a newspaper from 100,000 ft!!!

Blackbird flies, Blackbird spies
In broad daylight or a pitch black night

Blackbird flies, Blackbird spies
In broad daylight or a pitch black night

Blackbird soaring to amazing heights
At speeds approaching Mach 3.5
Quite a ride
Fastest and highest flying bird with recon eyes
Fastest and highest flying bird with recon eyes
Fastest and highest flying bird with recon eyes

Note: That at speed and height the SR-71 skin temp was over 400oF! Also, the rival MiG-25 Foxbat never really was a Mach 3 aircraft. The Soviets advised a safe speed of no more than Mach 2.8... but one Foxbat hit Mach 3.2 which gave a false impression for a time. Yes, it went that fast, but destroyed the engines in the process! The more modern MiG-31 Foxhound stays at Mach 2.8 (1864 mph).

Amazing plane. Too bad they are all retired. They could do things satellites could not. One hour coast to coast. Still don't understand that fuel thing. A wonder they didn't catch fire. I've seen the B-2, at least as close as an airman with an M-16 would allow. They are all based just 50 or so miles from Kansas City. Still eerie to watch one in flight.

The fuel for J56s had an extremely high flashpoint so fuel could leak all over the ground and no danger of fire. Also, the reason that they were retired was that radical new SAPs (Special Access Projects) rendered them useless. The milsat tech BS is nonsense. The Soviets tried with the Tsybin NM-1 but failed...

The SR-71 also holds the "Speed Over a Recognized Course" record for flying from New York to London, a distance of 3,508 miles (5,646 km), at 1,435+ mph (2,310+ km/h), and an elapsed time of 1 hour 54 minutes 56.4 seconds,

Los Angeles, CA to Washington, D.C., distance 2,299.7 miles (3,701.0 km), average speed 2,144.8 mph (3,451.7 km/h), and an elapsed time of 64 minutes 20 seconds.

I still suspect that spysat capability and the expense of maintaining and flying it led to the Blackbird's retirement. The X-37 orbital spaceplane may indeed become a surveillance device, the usual denials notwithstanding, able to be routed anywhere very quickly, whereas satellite coverage may not be continuous in some areas, or a non-geostationary one may take too much time to reach the surveillance target.

And congrats for finally finding another OS. There really *are* others out there, Rob!

The NY-London math works out to about 1,850+ mph or about 2,900+ km/hr. Can't trust that place... TT
