Is this a common practice in Finland? When cars had running boards, I heard of people riding on them, but this was later banned. Of course the fact that cars no longer had running boards was the more likely cause of the demise of this stunt. In one famous incident in the 1930's a group of inmates escaped from Leavenworth Federal Prison. They took the Warden and some guards as hostages and made them stand on the running boards to keep the police and guards from shooting at them as they drove away. Reportedly, police who sighted the vehicle, but didn't yet know of the escape, ignored it because riding outside the car was a common practice.
Unfortunately, yes. There are always teenage boys who want to show their bravery and manhood by doing the outside ride - often standing on the rear bumper or tailhook and holding on the roof rack, or sitting on the back door window sill with upper torso outside. Usually alcohol is involed.
