The Lyrics

I made this parody longer than the original song, just for fun! A few quick notes of explanation:(1) Buck Rogers was a science-fiction comic-book character of the 1920's, upon whom a lot of later American science-fiction was based (such as Flash Gordon) - Buck Rogers was trapped in suspended animation underground for 500 years and woke up in a futuristic time when people flew around with jet-packs on their backs;(2) James Bond, I think everybody knows - "M" is James' boss, "Q" is the guy who gives James his wild high-tech gadgets, and "Miss Moneypenny" is M's secretary;(3) Professor John Robinson was the patriarch of the space-traveling Robinson family in the campy-classic 1960's American TV sci-fi series "Lost In Space".
Buck Rogers finished
His duty in the Army
Then went to work in a mine
Cave-in knocked him out
And gas preserved his body
Woke up in some future time

Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack was how he got around
Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack was how Buck flew around
Jet pack, Bucky - fly home

Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack through futuristic skies
Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack you futuristic guy
Jet pack, Buck

James Bond was a
Super-secret British agent
Ian Fleming's macho-man
Every time the bad guys
Thought they had his number
He'd escape like Peter Pan

Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack was Jimmy's magic wand
Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack would save the life of Bond
Jet pack there, Jimmy - fly home

Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack or you might buy the farm
Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack will save your ass from harm
Jet pack there, Jimmy
You know M's waiting for you
With that gadget-man Q
And Miss Moneypenny
Jet on home there, Jimmy!

Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack's how those guys got around
Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack kept those guys off the ground
Jet pack, boys!

Robinson was Captain
Of the Lost-In-Space-ship
He was such a family man
When his daughter Penny
Was lost on some planet
He strapped on his rescue plan

Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack was how he scanned the ground
Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack was how Penny was found
Jet pack, Space-Dad - fly home

Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack's the coolest way to fly
Jet pack
Jet pack
Jet pack's engine fails - oops, you die

Jet pack?
No thank you!

You've managed a really fun song out of this. :) 5's Good job!

Great song, Johnny, but didn't need the explanation at the front.
Claude Prez - December 01, 2003 - Report this comment
Ditto what Phil said--I enjoy stuff more if the writer trusts me to get the references; makes me feel all superior and smartypants and crap. Still, great job.
Johnny D - December 01, 2003 - Report this comment
Thanks Guy, Adagio, Phil, and Claude.

Phil and Claude - Your point is well-taken.....My reasons for including the preface-notes: I felt that some younger people might not know who Buck Rogers is, and maybe not even who John Robinson is.....so I decided to include some preface-notes about them. And since I was going to write up some notes about Buck and John, I figured I might as well include a few words about Agent 007, since there might be some folks out there who aren't as familiar with Ian Fleming's super-spy as most people probably are.

It was not my intention to detract from anybody's enjoyment of the parody, and if that's what happened, my sincerest apologies. Thanks for your comments.

Great job, Johnny. Get the pacing right and my enjoyment of the parody multiplies. Fives, mate.

Whoever doesn't know Buck Rogers and Lost In Space needs a culture crash course.

LOL! I remember Walter Chronkite hosted a show in the 60's called the 21stCentury. The show predictcted, that we'd all be flying around with a jet belt by the year 2000!
Johnny D - December 01, 2003 - Report this comment
Diva, yes, I remember Unkie Walter's "21st Century" show! Your comment reminds me of a TV commercial for IBM that featured Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko on Deep Space Nine, Hawk on Spenser for Hire). The commercial was very short, 30 seconds or even less, and all it consisted of was Avery Brooks looking indignantly into the camera and saying "It's the year 2000. Where are the flying cars? I was promised flying cars! Where--are--the FLYING CARS ?!!!"
Steven Cavanagh - December 01, 2003 - Report this comment
It gets scarier than that. Anyone remember the Buck Rogers sci-fi show with Gil Gerard? I watched it when I was a kid (I'm 30ish), and It intro portrayed the FUTURE like this: "The year is 1987, and NASA launches the last of America's deep space probes..."
Johnny D - December 02, 2003 - Report this comment
Thanks Steven - I remember that Buck Rogers TV show now that you mention it. Just goes to show the quality of the prognostications of the average TV writer, I guess.
Paul Robinson - December 02, 2003 - Report this comment
Johnny D - Shoot, I thought John Robinson was either the guy who used to coach the USC Football team or one of my disinheirited relatives (or one who was disinheiriting me, maybe). But then again I didn't remember how "Turning Japanese" went either. It appears there are some major gaps in my cultural knowledge. So the explanation was ok. Besides, if nobody else on this site rambled on people might notice how much I do. Thanks. Nice job. I even remembered to hit "Place your vote" again.

J-J-J-Johnny and the Jetssss! It's shocking now how good I thought the Gil Gerard version of Buck Rodgers was, and how laughable it now seems. I suppose Brooks could've brought a flying car back here with him on the Defiant, but then, that would've violated the Temporal Prime Directive. (Yes, I know, it's just a TV show and I should get a life.) Rice: The last word we should be hearing here is "crash!"
Johnny D - December 02, 2003 - Report this comment
I forgot to say thank you Diva, so thank you Diva!

Thanks, Paul...I'm glad the explanation was OK.

And thank you, MP - and don't worry about looking to get a life - you already have one, at least according to the Great And Powerful Oz (oreo, reo, yoh!).

Good song, but after skipping the introduction, I was hoping the whole thing would be about Buck Rogers =)
Spaff.com - July 04, 2004 - Report this comment
I'd like to say thank you on behalf of amiright and ourselves; you DEFINITELY passed the audition.
Johnny D - July 05, 2004 - Report this comment
Jeff: Thanks...I guess I didn't want to stick to BR since BR might be kind of obscure to some people...they've heard the name "Buck Rogers", but how many people today have actually read the old original BR comics?

Spaff: Thank you, and you're welcome, and.......umm, please do tell me which "audition" are you referring-to? I'm not kidding when I say that I really don't get your joke/reference here...I'm pretty tired, it's been a long day...

Very good parody, very good ending. I also enjoyed the discussion above on whether explanations are necessary.

At the end of the rooftop concert in the movie "Let It Be", John Lennon jokingly says "On behalf of the band and ourselves, I hope we passed the audition" (Right after performing "Get Back")

JJ: Thanks, and I'm glad you liked the discusion, too.

Highlander: Ah yes, I can picture that famous rooftop concert in my mind's eye right now...thanks.
