Original Song Title:

"Let It Be"

Original Performer:

The Beatles

Parody Song Title:

"Leave It Be"

Parody Written by:

Guy DiRito

The Lyrics

Why is proper grammer so much trouble, Sister Mary had taught me,
Here's a phrase that is dumb, "leave it be".
She said my head had thickness as she pointed out for all to see,
"Where'd you get that phrase from, leave it be"?
Leave it be, leave it be, leave it be,
Here's a phrase that is dumb, "leave it be".

And those with broken English diction use this phraseology,
Makes you want to censor, "leave it be".
Please don't get me started about what Sister Mary taught to me,
Bad language spreads like cancer, "leave it be".
Leave it be, leave it be, leave it be, leave it be,
I still hear their chatter, "leave it be".
Leave it be, leave it be, leave it be, leave it be,
Where'd they get that phrase from. "leave it be"?
It's a phrase that is dumb, "leave it be".

So English if you study, you will say it right eventually,
Find the proper grammar, "let it be".
So wake up as you learn to mimic, please just try it once and see,
Where did this phrase come from. "leave it be"?
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be,
Then you will improve some, fluently.

Good job, Guy. But I think you forgot one "leave it be" in the first stanza (second to last line). Other than that, you did just fine. 5's.

Whall, shucks, Guy-Bob. I might could be fixin' to leave you a heapin' heppin' of Phonics Phives. Hey, did all y'all ever notice, southerners start every sentence with, "I'll tell you what...", but then they never do.
Guy - March 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Yes David and they like to test yer hearin' ability with 'Ya hear'? Or when they want to say something negative about someone they say "You know Bill Soandso, Bless his heart", then they can say whatever and it makes it OK.

Pat, I grew up in a small coal mining community that was made up of European immigrants. The eastern Europeans used a form of "Leave it be". They would just say either "leev-e-be" or "leev-a-stay". This is actually where I got my idea.

Alvin, Are you any kin to Jed Clampett? LOL JD and Paul - Thanks!

Serefina, I may have missed a "Leave it Be" I'm only as good as the original lyrics I download when I'm writing. Thanks, I'll try to watch that in the future.

Jan - Thanks!

"Where'd you get that phrase from?" - never use a preposition to end a sentence with, Sister.

Are you sure you're not related to Phil?
John Jenkins - March 02, 2004 - Report this comment
Very good, Guy. I like the way you substituted "is dumb" for "wisdom."

Nice job here Guy. Tryin' to get caught up on the parodies I've missed over the past couple of days. And I agree-"leave it be" has to be one of the stupidest phrases I've ever heard, lol. Again,GJ.

Nice job, GD'R. I particularly liked how you were able to fit "phraseology" in there. Nothing against you or the Fab Four or English speakers in general, but the phrase "let it be" becomes just as silly when you analyze it.

Grumble, stupid prescriptivists... fine pacing, but I find no humor in making fun of nonstandard (but perfectly understandable in context) dialects. To quote Pinker once more: "It is even a bit misleading to call Standard English a "language" and these variations "dialects," as if there were some meaningful difference between them. The best definition comes from the linguist Max Weinreich: a language is a dialect with an army and a navy" (The Language Instinct, 16).

I's almost a-skeered to comment; what if I say some dang fool thing what makes me look like a mo-ron? Ennyhoo, real good.

I'm glad I didn't go to Catholic school. This one has my mind churning a bit: "Let it be" could mean "allow it to exist undisturbed" where as "Leave it be"... ... doesn't make any sense at all. I liked this parody. 5s
Invisible Boy - February 06, 2008 - Report this comment
(ABC) Well, I did go to Catholic school and I've got the welts to prove it. My Mom just told me to "leave it be".
Matthias - February 06, 2008 - Report this comment
I agree with Agrimorfee 100%, Sorry Guy, Not one of your best, but it wasn't bad so it still got 5's because I didn't notice anything wrong with the parody, it just didn't thrill me.

(ABC3L) This isn't bad, Guy....but it didn't quite do it for me. Great point you're making, though

"L" round commenters. Your honesty in your comments is always refreshing to me. I like eating way too much so if the kitchen has heat I ride it out for the reward at the end. You can't make a stew without onions, it's getting the right onions and the correct amount that do the trick.. Thanks to you all.

ABC- I didn't know you withdrew, Guy. Sorry to hear that. I'll still comment, though. I agree that this wasn't one of your best, but still a very well paced and funny grammar lesson!

(ABC) Yikes. I'm a self-admitted grammar fascist and I had no idea that "leave it be" was improper—thanks for the reminder! Good job, Guy.
