The Lyrics

Legend has it that after the Lord of Coventry taxed the citizens to their teeth, his wife persuaded him to lower the taxes on the condition that she ride naked through the streets. In the original tale, Godiva had very long hair that covered anything interesting. In a prudish retelling, the citizens of Coventry respected Godiva enough to stay indoors. All but one fellow.
She rode through the streets with her hair gently sweeping
While one voyeur gladly peeps
Her hair covered all, and so modesty keeping
Still one voyeur gladly peeps
I don't know why - did she relax, her hair like flax blown back
I can't see why her husband had taxed them
Did she go wax then?

She took off her clothes for she was a Godiva
And one voyeur gladly peeps
That perv took a look and then drowned in saliva
Still that voyeur gladly peeps
I don't know why he was diverted
He was perverted, true
Sneaking a sly glance that was furtive
(Or is this story true?)

She rode through the streets with her hair gently sweeping
While one voyeur gladly peeps
Her hair covered all
Still one voyeur gladly peeps

Well this parody was worth a peep.

:-) Incidentally, Godiva was wife of Leofric, earl of Mercia (Coventry was not exactly big enough at the time to have anything like a Lord) - there is a wonderful telling of the story here: http://www.abacom.com/~jkrause/godiva.html

Surely this performance should be credited to George Harrison only? I saw him/Eric (Clapton) in Birmingham, England in December 1969! Martin ps "Sweet Indigo" (or anyone who knows her), please contact me on: martin@packer34.freeserve.co.uk AS SOON AS POSSIBLE? MP
