The Lyrics

Here's a free online sample to help you remember this classic R&B hit from 1969.....this free sample is especially helpful for the frequently-repeated line that I parodied as "tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?": http://mfile.akamai.com/3153/wm2/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/uswm2/018/433018_1_01.asx?obj=v31007 ........... ............. ........... And here is another free sample that covers a different set of verses from the original song: http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?r=20.asx&link=bwd334hkejol0y5mfluz99q
Tribute-parodies are such a gas!

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

What a trip just watchin' as the votes get cast

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

There are too many groovy things to say in tribute-parodies

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

Fulsome and smarmy vote-rakin', everybody gets pleased

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

This one's reachin' out to be believed

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

And the wor-or-or-ords droppin' names without a reprieve

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

Everything here is so smarmy and phony
And everything here is just blarney baloney
But it feels
So real, so real, so real, so real, so real
Can you dig it?
WOO! WOO!

Guy can dig it, Mike can dig it, Phil can dig it, Claude can dig it, Bob can dig it, Tim can dig it
Oh let's dig it
Can you dig it, baby?
Mer can dig it, Pip can dig it, Malc can dig it, Jeff can dig it, Pat can dig it, Spaff can dig it
Oh let's dig it
Can you dig it, baby?

( instrumental )

This song's full of love and politics

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

And its wor-or-or-ords tryin' to stroke egos a bit

(tribute-parodies are so crass, baby, can you dig it?)

Everything here is so blatantly cheesy
And everything here is so fawningly sleazy
But it feels
So real, so real, so real, so real, so real
Can you dig it?
WOO! WOO!

Guy can dig it, Mike can dig it, Phil can dig it, Claude can dig it, Bob can dig it, Tim can dig it
Oh let's dig it
Can you dig it, baby?
Mer can dig it, Pip can dig it, Malc can dig it, Jeff can dig it, Pat can dig it, Spaff can dig it
Oh let's dig it
Can you dig it, baby?

( repeat until you imagine hearing your own name mentioned )

I can dig it. Can't you dig it, Ralph?
Ed Norton - December 16, 2003 - Report this comment
No, Mike, Ralph drives a bus. I'm the one that digs. I work in the sewer.

Thanks for the mention, Johnny bo bonny. A fun game for music geeks is figuring out which song was #1 the day you were born and assessing its impact on your life. I had a girlfriend whose "birthday song" was Hugh Masekela's version of "Grazing in the Grass." Alas, she resented the cow implications.

Thank you, Spaff. Now you've got me wondering....I want to find out now what song was #1 on my birthday in 1958....
