The Lyrics

Of all my immigrant forebears the one with the most interesting story has to be Louis Courtin. He graduated from the Ecole Militaire de Saint-Cyr in Paris in the 1850's and immediately went to America, which makes his descendants think that he needed to escape France due to some incident. Some say he may have killed someone in a duel. Later, he would serve as an officer in the Union Army. I'm amazed I never made this song parody connection before
Ah Louis, Louis, Oh no
Say you gotta go now
Oui, oui, oui, oui, oui
Ya say a Louis Louis, Oh Gran Pere'
Say, say you gotta blow now

A spry young Frenchman he take to sea
He waste the school of the .. mil'tary
He shoot the gun and hit the bone
He know for sure, never see his home

A Louis, Louis, nah, nah, nah, nah
You gotta stow, oh no
A Louis, Louis, Oh Papi
Say that you gotta go

Three nights and days they 'spect the scene
They'll send my pere' to the guillotine
Ah stow on ship, wont find him there
He 'scape the blade by the breadth of hair

Ah Louis, Louis, oh no, say you gotta blow
Oui, oui, oui, oui, oui
Ya said a Louis, Louis, Oh Papi
Said you better blow

Ok lets send him off right now!

(Cue guitar solo that nowadays wouldn't tax the abilities of a rock band from a day care center)

He smell the Philly harbor air
It wont be long he .. wed Grand Mere'
He take up arms 'gainst the Rebel Man
They tell him "You gonna use your school again."

Ah Louis, Louis .. Oh no
Said you gotta go now
Oui, oui, oui, oui, oui
Ya said a Louis, Louis .. Oh, Papi
I said You gotta go
I said you gotta go now

Just hustle on outta here
JUST BLOW!

Fun exploration of your family tree, which sounds like it almost got chopped. Like the "wed Grand Mere" line. "Use your school again".

I can only infer that Louis served in the Union by the fact that his son Rudolph was able to marry into well established Philadelphia family in the years after the Civil War. if Louis had refused to serve despite his military background, his name would have been mud. No way would that marriage have occurred ... just as you can infer that something must have caused Louis to flee France. You dont go to the equivalent of West Point, and then suddenly take off for no reason. For one thing there would have a service commitment in the French Army

So he had to switch from the French MiniƩ rifle to the Springfield Model 61? An improvement. 555 shots!

Good thing Louis jumped the pond when he did -- Eventually he would have faced the Germans and the Dreyser Needle gun in the Franco Prussian war of 1870. Would have been around 40 at the time ........ Come to think of it, he would have crossed the Atlantic anyway -- as part of the military force that kept Maximillian on the throne of Mexico

On the other side of the militarism scale, my great grandfather Theodore S emigrated from Germany in the 1870's. My older bros would joke that Theodore was the family's first draft dodger, as he left Germany to avoid the Franco Prussian War ..... Of course, I had to set them straight by pointing out that Theodore was born in 1861, and that the Franco Prussian War was in 1870. And then I'd point out that unless Theodore was trying to avoid service as a drummer boy's adjutant, the numbers didn't freaking add up ...... At which point, my older brothers would pick me up and shove my head in a toilet for being a little wise ass. It's good to be the kid brother!!

CML - very funny. 5 Louis'. I cracked up at the "oui, oui, oui"s and your comment on the guitar bit. Good one! I was surprised to not see more parodies from you (3!). You obviously know what you're doing. Please, send more. (note to Chris-"almost got chopped" was very funny!)

At first I didn't understand what you meant by why don't you post more, Brad.... CML is short for Callmelennie .. if you look in the author index for Callmelennie, I've got 232 submissions, and I frequently do multiple songs in my posts, so I actually have 300 songs. I posted a few things under CML, because I either wanted to show it to a family member who didn't agree with my politics, or I did something a little racy that I never wanted my kids to see (lol) .. See "Cunny" (parody of Beatles "Money") for an example of that. ............ Rob Ardnt started referring to me as "CML" in the comments and I thought "why not adopt that, save me a few keystrokes."
