Decades ago, Spider-Man's girlfriend Gwen Stacey was killed by the Green Goblin as Spidey tried to save her. Years later, a story had Gwen apparently come back, but it was a clone. That story also had a clone of Peter Parker / Spider-Man, but a Spider-Man was killed. For a short time, the surviving Spidey didn't know if he was the original or the clone, but he soon realized that he had memories that the clone couldn't possibly have.Fast-forward a couple of decades. Marvel runs an absolutely horrible story, the notorious "Spider-Clone Saga." In it, it's revealed that the other Spider-Man survived, and has been living under the identity of "Ben Reilly" (from Peter's Uncle Ben, combined with Aunt May's maiden name), who later decides to fight crime again with a new costume and the identity of "The Scarlet Spider.". Furthermore, it's later "revealed" that Ben Reilly / Scarlet Spider was the original, and the Peter Parker / Spider-Man of the past few decades' worth of comics was the clone! (Some say this was done to undo Peter's marriage to Mary Jane Watson-Parker.) The story had one high point: the very well-written death of Aunt May (which was later undone). Things got worse before they got better, with other Spider-Clones appearing (including a distorted one called "Kaine" and another called "Spider-Cide," and a whole bunch of clones that appeared in the "Maximum Clonage" sub-story within the overall arc.) Finally, the fans had had enough, and a new creative team was brought in to clean up the mess. They had the original Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) turn out to be alive, and that this was all his plot, and that Ben Reilly was indeed the clone and Peter the original. Ben died heroically, and his clone body conveniently dissolved into dust.This parody (posted on the late, lamented online service GEnie's Comics RoundTable, which I was an Assistant SysOp of) was written in the midst of this way-too-long storyline, and pretty much sums up my opinion of it:
