I was cooking the possum stew
Concentrating on fire
I heard a shot from the distant woods
and the hounds barking louder
Them cousins Bubba, and Zeke
gone hunting with my brother
They come to me and dragged a deer
keep bragging to each other

They said:

Well they climbed on the pick-up truck
Zeke pressed the gas pedal
They went running upon the ridge
Heard clanking of metal
Saw cousin Lurleen, her sons
two youngsters of three and four
They looked me up and in my pot
they asked if they'd get some more

In evening we went then by the lake
Bubba rolled in the moonshine

Saw cousin Polly, she asked me
if I had something for her
"You got some mushrooms? Or pot?
Or moonshine or some harder?"

She said:
