The Lyrics

For the Firefly/Aerosmith fans.
(Artist: Narrow Width )

Keep…the show on. Keep…the show on.

I found a great program late on the tube -
A western in space, the motliest crew.
The captain was tough, but he had a good heart.
I dug the action, and the writing was smart.

So the week after that I sat down to unwind.
Got my chips and a Coke, I was watchin’ the time.
Had an HD screen, and that THX sound.
When I checked the listings, it could not be found.

Keep…the show on. Keep…the show on.

Well, I could not believe what I couldn't see –
My very fav'rite program wasn’t on my TV.
It seemed to have gone, but for reasons unknown
I searched the web, found I wasn’t alone. (Yes I did)

They ran a campaign, tried to bring it on back.
It didn’t work out, but the studio cracked.
They put it on disc, made a movie that rocked.
Now Serenity lives! The coats of brown cannot be stopped!

Firefly was the greatest show ever. May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.
Brad Snyder - March 08, 2018 - Report this comment
A great line, Dr. Oliver, among many. That’s how you know someone’s a true Firefly fan, they always have at least one quote from the show at the ready. One of the best programs in the ‘verse. Stay shiny.

Firefly and Battlestar Galactica had one (I think deliberate) thing in common - no aliens! Not that shows with aliens like Star Trek och movies like Star Wars are bad, they're not, but alien quirks are all too often used as a cheap writers tool to bang out subpar episodes and scenes (think Jar-Jar Binks) whereas shows without aliens can't do that, their writing has to be HUMANLY good all the time.
Brad Snyder - March 08, 2018 - Report this comment
Great observation, Peter. They were among the best. BG had cyborgs, and FF had Reavers. Though they were alien-LIKE, the cyborgs were man-made, and the Reavers USED to be human. Yeah, the writers for both definitely stepped it up. And aliens ARE cool ("Alien", "Aliens", "Galaxy Quest"), but it's got to be a real challenge to do space operas without them. Wash: "That sounds like something out of science fiction!" Zoe: "You live in a spaceship, dear."

Wrong. BSG the original series had Seraphs (light beings), Ovions (insect beings that consumed humans), and the Borellian Nomen which were humanoids not part of the 12 Colonies. Also, the original concept of the Cylons (which are not cyborgs, or part human but AI cybernetic creations) were as serpent people to keep the religious background of Larson's Mormon religion. Get the facts straight.

In addition to the above statement, Firefly was also in Battlestar Galactica! http://imgur.com/bXeyQIH
And in the pilot:
In the opening sequence of Firefly's pilot episode, "Serenity," Nathan Fillion's Malcolm Reynolds is fighting the Battle of Serenity Valley. And losing. But before he's forced to lay down his guns, he hops behind a giant anti-aircraft cannon to shoot down an Alliance fighter. And when he powers up the gun, the heads-up-display reveals a very familiar logo in the top part of screen.

Hey, if Alien and Blade Runner share the same universe, and Alien and Firefly share the same universe, then doesn't that mean they ALL share the same universe??? That would conflict with Battlestar Galactica's universe which showed Firefly in the air over Roslin's doctors office! Who blew it???

Some true BSG (original and new) and Firefly fans. I didn’t know any of this. Sounds like even the directors are fans of each other. Who can blame them? They’re all great shows. BSG fan: Sorry, I haven’t seen the original series. I’m only familiar with the most recent iteration. Those particular aliens sounds pretty cool, though.

And Star Wars happens a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (I guess that would put it first on the list, if "long...ago" is referring to our time; just saying...) B > )

Never heard so much Geekspeak in my life over a stupid show! Star Trek was the greatest sci-fi tv hit ever, not some dumbed downed space cowboy BS like Firefly. If it was so good why didn't the fans get the series restarted? All they got was one mediocre movie by buying dvds!!! Serenity is forgotten already! I bet the new Lost in Space coming to Netflix on April 13th will be better!
Trekker - March 08, 2018 - Report this comment
The Enterprise was launched in 2245, if that matters. I don't think there are comparative years for Star Wars. Earliest date I could find was 6021 pre-BBY for the Sith. Star Wars the movie was 0 BBY AFAIK.

Brad, nice parody. Not going to weigh in on the nerd debate, except to say that the only real losers here are the ones who aren't willing to stand behind their opinions with their usual name (pet peeve of mine, I won't shut up about it). Seriously though - love Aerosmith, love Firefly, well done, keep 'em coming

@ BSG Fan presumed Rob: I'm obviously talking about the new BSG of which star Edward James Olmos publicly said he'd quit if they introduced aliens - which of course might be interpreted as that the writers did consider and put forward such a suggestion at some point - luckily the man seems to have had a veto. As for Star Trek I never want to see another another new ancient Klingon Ritual again in my life, no matter how badly script writers need a quick fix to set up a CBE (Character Building Episode).

Hey, Claude. While I appreciate the debate that branched out of this parody, I was hoping someone might say something about the actual parody. As usual, The Prez comes through (you gotta let me know if that moniker is okay to use or not)! Really appreciate the positive comments. As for the “BSG1978/BSG2004/FF/STO/STNG (*deep breath*) Alien/Prometheus/Blade Runner/which is better/date” debate - they’re all great shows. Firefly’s one of my favorites, and when I heard “Sweet Emotion“ playing on the radio, and the title leapt out at me, I knew I had a project worth pursuing. Thanks Claude, for confirming that. I’ve been recording my parodies at home with GarageBand (it’s helps with the meter), and I'm looking forward to getting more tech-savvy, so I can share audio versions. Okay, back to working on my Billy Joel April Fool’s parody! (let’s see: Shenanigans [Piano Man]? The Prankster [The Stranger]? Fool’s Day Prankin’ Time [New York State of Mind]? Needs Allstate Insurance [She’s Always a Woman]? hmm...).

It's all good Brad - yeah, another peeve of mine is people cluelessly using someone else's comment section to make themselves feel smart or whatever while ignoring the actual parody - you know, the reason the comment section exists in the first place. Which is weird because just about everybody here writes parodies themselves and wants their efforts recognized. You'd think that whole golden rule thingie would kick in. Anyway, looking forward to hearing your recordings - and I like those Billy Joel ideas; hopefully a lot of others will join in as well.
Peter Andersson - March 09, 2018 - Report this comment
The need of the many (dollars on the script writers' paychecks) outweigh the need of the one (true fan's longing for consistency).

As for timeline mixups and crossovers they themselves have obviously been the basis for writers/producers cashing in on them; "Alien vs Predators" movies comes to mind, but there's actually a "Aliens vs Predator vs The Terminator" comic out there - JFGI! :-)

Anyway, as for the parody and writing technique I thought "Keep…the show on" was a perfect sub for "Sweet emotion". Good first lines and good last lines always elevate a parody a little extra when you come up with them - even if the rest is good in itself.
Peter Andersson - March 10, 2018 - Report this comment
I must add that I think I might not totally agree with Claude about commenting in ways that (seems to) ignore the actual parody (though if it's pure trolling he's referring to then I do agree). Obviously technique feedback is the best, but when you feel you have nothing to bring on that subject at the moment but still wanna show appreciation for what you've just read/listened/followed you can post a related pun of your own or a friendly comment to help continue the fun in the comments section. Not to mention that thinking up such comments can sometimes be the starting point of another parody on the same or a similar subject if some different old song starts playing in the back of your head over the words you're just writing. At least for me that has happened more and more often the longer I've been in this hobby. Before I started OWN I'd say maybe half my parody ideas started in that way or close enough,
Claude Prez - March 10, 2018 - Report this comment
That's true Peter - and I apologize if you thought I was referring to your behavior at all. I guarantee I've engaged in discussions myself (like, um, this one) in people's comment sections that were unrelated to that parody. But my gripe is when a ton of people chime in on a subject but nobody seems to even notice there's a parody there. It's rude is all. Of course we're all really Chucky's guests here; I tend to forget that as well
