The Lyrics
Barry Manilow's "Copacabana" is a deceptive little number. A mellow-toned pop artist sings of lost love and violent death in such a slick, light-hearted way, that I would bet a lot of listeners don't realize what the song is actually about. So, I started wondering how Mr Manilow might handle a tale of apocalyptic disaster.

In style, this was a match for the other version. But adapting it to our time, instead of the period in which it actually takes place like you did for other one, brings it close to ruin. And citing Obama's golfing was bad: When THIS President goes on vacation, he kills terrorists; when the last one did, he enabled them.
The song "Eve of Destruction" has been continually updated since 1965 to reflect the increasing time astronauts could stay in space, new crises such as the Watts Riots, the shootings at Columbine High School, etc. The Chinese have adopted a more market based economy and are trade partners rather than enemies. There is precedent for updating the song as it would be sung today. It can remain relevant, rather than a fossil.
