I always liked Ronnie Spector's version of the original, and it was her voice I was hearing in my mind as I read this. Especially the 'woah-oh-oh's! Why don't you have a go at the Jam's 'English Rose' (off their 'All Mod Cons' album) in honour of Madonna's attempts to make it as a children's writer with 'The English Roses'?
Don't know it. The Jam never made it here. I think they toured the U.S. once, but got paid peanuts. Of course, BJ wrote it in honor of Ronnie, just like he wrote "Uptown Girl" for Frankie & the Seasons, "Tell Her About It" for Dion, "Baby Grand" for (and with) Ray Charles, and "An Innocent Man" for the Drifters. And I'm not sure "Big Shot" wasn't written with Neil Young in mind.
