The Lyrics

Laying here, looking at the greeter
Someone lays a coupon on my chest
Ovaltine is flowing down my fingers
Nair is flowing down from the rack

I try to fix my hair but there's no feeling
And when I brush, I find there's nothing there
The cart beside me stopped its squeaky wheeling
The purse I knew is smudged beyond repair

I remember
I was shopping along, and hit a display of Nair
I remember
I was shopping along, and hit a display of Nair

Then I look, at the store director
His face, is filled with hollow glee
He bends and makes a bright announcement
He says, "Your groceries are free"

I remember
I was shopping along, and hit a display of Nair
I remember
I was shopping along, and hit a display of Nair

Change, is rolling out my pockets
Hair is falling out of my scalp
My blouse is drenched with goop where I'm lying
God in Heaven, will these stains come out

I remember
I was shopping along, and hit a display of Nair
I remember
I was shopping along, and hit a display of Nair

I well remember the original song, local radio got a lot of flack for playing it because of its gruesome tone. There was a mid air collision over Kansas City, Kansas, small plane and helicopter, right about the time that song came out. Also a couple of college sports teams were killed in plane crashes. Some DJ's tried to link the song with those disasters. The big problem with the original was the siren effect at the end. A lot of kids would pull over when they heard it, thinking the cops were after them. Someone said there was an FCC rule against siren effects on the radio after that. Sounds like something they would do.

We got a jukebox in our lunchroom in high school (a big deal at the time) and for the longest time this was the only song that would ever be playing whenever I walked in. They finally got fed up with it and took the record out.

Porfle, you say in your comments about (a big deal at the time)... so what time was that? How old are you? I am 47, so a lot of my material is so dark. I admire how you keep things so silly!

Thanks, Rob! I've always loved humor that's on the silly side. How old am I? Well...without getting too specific, I'm old enough to have been in high school when "D.O.A." first came out!
