The Lyrics

"That half-awake, half-asleep, mostly undead, too-much-thorazine sensation... All you can do is lie there. Function? Impossible - save as a land to be populated by hallucinations that come unbidden and only leave when the the drug wears off and the pain from your incision returns with screaming pain.
Pain is come, you're screaming,
Nightmare slash, not dreaming,
Night nurse comes with a needle,
Walk softly steps to banish pain,
You can be like she is.

Come on baby, (whispered) Don't fear the Raven,
Baby, take my hand, Don't fear the Raven,
No more you'll cry, Don't fear the Raven,
Here it comes now...

Sudden crash, light is gone,
Niter crusts on rotten bone,
The former face now a ghoul,
Teeth falling just like drool,
Black wings ride hidden winds.

A nightmare world has come to roost in me,
Sable wings block my sight,
A nightmare world has come to roost in me,
Rusted croaking becomes
A nightmare world has come to roost in me,
A single word - NEVERMORE! (echoes three or four times)

Come on baby, (whispered) Don't fear the Raven,
Baby, take my hand, Don't fear the Raven,
No more you'll cry, Don't fear the Raven,
Here it comes now...

The wall shows a gaping crack,
Laying undead upon your back,
Wail your voice for lost Lenore
Razor-swinging ape come once more,
And the door crashed open and Ed appeared,
Life and sanity then disappeared,
Burning stallion bucked and reared,
Ride on, Metzengerstein.

Come on, baby... Spaded earth piled,
Like a hell-sent flood... Amontillado,
Clanking chains speak of the eternal grave
Like Fortunato,
A rusting trowel,
I'm like Fortunato...

Come on baby... Don't fear the raven.
Afternotes: All of these seemingly obscure references are from the works of E. A. Poe: "and the door crashed open, and *Ed* appeared..." The Poe-World (for this place is utterly real) is found in the long-stay corridors of hospitals. There, its tickets - pain drugs - are given out on schedules, and with each such dose comes a fresh nightmare visit to the land of the long dying scream, where light and vision are gone to dust, and where the flapping of sable wings 'upon the night's plutonian shore' speaks of but one single thing: "Don't Fear the Raven."

Well, I got to see the raven today, at least until the Valium kicked in. I had surgery on my 'rear', and was given something that's supposed to be worse than Morphine, i.e. Dilaudid. My surgery otherwise went well, and once the Valium started working, I no longer was living upon the night's plutonian shore. Thank God for valium. Dennis

I get to visit the poe-world next month on the forteenth, as I will be having my innards rearanged so's I can lose weight. I am not looking forward to seeing Nevermore, and I just *know* I will see Lenore and Berenice (she of the falling teeth)

That time, it wasn't just the raven - there were whole flocks of them, niter-slimed bricks, nurses - were they nurses? - in grave clothing, and the anesthesiologist looked just like Roderic Usher. I could hear the screams of the damned... You had better fear the Raven if you have morphine or hydromorphone IV and they don't dose you with Valium. Trust me, I've served my time in that particular HELL.
