The Lyrics

This is in the same vein as JAB's recent parodies about linguistic phenomena, except in this case, I'll be going for the jugular (ba doom tssh!) Ok, if not the jugular, how 'bout the glottular. .... I'm talking about the our old friend, the glottal stop; the noise that Cockney and Scottish dialects make to replace the a perfectly good "t" in such phrases as "a li'l bi' of wa'er." This consonant, which is also found in Hawaiian words, such as "Hawai'i" is basically an unvoiced version of hard "g" .... The same dialects drop their "h's", but not 100% sure if they replace it with the glottal stop
There's something 'appening 'ere
Wha' i' is no' exactly clear
There's a Sco' with a burr whose quite near
Making sounds a li''le bi' queer
I think it's time we STOPPED
Sco''ies wha's tha' sound
Shakespeare's English going down

There's glo''al lines being drawm
The language ain't righ' if all the "Ts" are gone
Young Cockneys swallow their "Ts"
Ge''ing so much resistance from Received*
I think it's time we STOPPED
Cockneys, wha's tha' noise
Everybody aping East End boys

What a weird day for the Queen's
'undreds of Scoh'smen on the scene
Trilling their "Rs" and droppin' their "Gs"
Mostly saying "Sod off to good speech."
In think it's time we STOPPED, 'ey, wha' tha' note
Sounds like somethin' caught in your throat

Glo''alization strikes deep
Into syn'ax i' will creep
I' starts when you mimic East End
Don't hold the line it spreads
All over the Thames*
It's time we STOPPED
Children, wha' tha' dash
Everybody sounds like working class

STOP, hey, wha's tha' sign
Apostrophe le''er blows my mind
Stop, now, what's that catch
Everybody lose it with dispatch
Stop now, if you please
Everybody needs to say their "Ts"
Stop, Britain, what's that sound
Shakespeare's English on the ground

*Received Pronunciation -- English as spoken in the media; The Queen's English ....... *A less extreme form of Cockney appears to be cropping up in the Thames Estuary area

You guys should watch "Outlander" on Starz! Lots of Scottish Gaelic (GĂ idhlig), Scots, and Scottish English. The Scots language and Scottish English should not be confused with Scottish Gaelic, of course!

Some years back, a young lady on her high school quiz bowl team and I were "speaking" in Scots brogue-which, of course, neither of us had the privilege of being Scots. Anyway, i asked her, "Lass, whurr di' ye larrrnnn to speak s'good Scots?" To which she replied, "Ach,, fra' Braveheart!" Aye!
