The Lyrics

In 2011, The Council for Living Music and Musicians Local 802 of New York created Save Live Music on Broadway, in response to finding out that the strings are all taped. Even before they founded the campaign, theaters around the globe started using tapes and MIDI-equipped "virtual orchestras" not just to supplement pit orchestras, but even to replace them! It's a matter of financial reasons, space constraints, and as I pointed out in the article, "Could Shrinking School Music Programs Endanger Theater Pit Orchestras?," shrinking music programs in schools, just to name a few. On a side note, I watched a musical on Broadway once. It was the stage adaptation of the Disney 90's movie musical BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Besides the costumes, special effects, and choreography, the music from a real pit orchestra made it very magical and enjoyable. That was something that made it so memorable compared to a scenario if it were accompanied by tape.
(instrumental intro)

Canned music, canned music, playing on the Broadway stage
Canned music, canned music, getting theater fans enraged
Showtunes on the records are only half the show when it's
Canned music, canned music

Some minutes before I watched it, I asked something I want to know
To myself, "Is the music live or from a stereo?"
I found myself a seat near the orch was in the pit, playin'
Live music live music

I sat myself on that seat, to me it was a sight
I've never seen that pit orch playin', accompanyin' that show that night
I enjoyed that big chance seein' all that big song and dance 'cuz t'was
Ah - live music, live music

Canned music, canned music, playing on the Broadway stage
Canned music, canned music, getting theater fans enraged
Showtunes on the records are only half the show when it's
Canned music, canned music

Canned music, canned music (repeats and fades into instrumental interlude)

(instrumental interlude)

The rhythm was all around me, I was really steppin' out
My own self said I'm livin' for this music, I just knew what it's all about
I knew I'm just a theater girl, this stuff has got me in a whirl
It's just some live music, live music

And that was the last night they played, blowin' horns into my memory,
Most players had to leave me for the machines, I guess I'll never solve that mystery
I'll teach those guys a lesson please keep those things off the pit when it's
Live music, live music

Some minutes before I watched it, I asked something I want to know
To myself, "Is the music live or from a stereo?"

Ooooh...
