The Lyrics

The Day the Dinos Died by Jeffrey Moran

A long, long time ago, sixty-six million years or so, the earth collided with an asteroid.
And for the dinos and all their kin, it was the very, very end. Their demise, they could not avoid.
Hot for a few days, then the ice. Conditions for saurians were not nice.
Bad news for the dinos, but making room for rhinos.
No one knows if they cried, if they froze or if they fried.
But they had no place to hide, the day the dinos died. And they were singing:
Chorus: Bye, bye, Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, and Indosuchus. Troodon and Alamosaurus.
Singing, “This’ll be the day that we die. This’ll be the day that we die.”

And they found reptilian love before that big rock from above. Geologists tell us so.
They believe that giant rock caused a world-wide mortal shock, and evolution worked way too slow.
Well, I know that plesiosaurs could swim, ‘cause fossils show their finny limbs.
They should have worn some shoes, but they couldn’t read the news.
That asteroid really sucked in the ocean where it struck.
And they knew they were out of luck, the day the dinos died. And they were singing:
Chorus:

Ten years later, they were no more, and moss was growing on the shore, but not like how it used to be.
When Tyrannosaurus ruled the world, giant clams made lustrous pearls, and you could hear Antarctasaurus roar.
And while T-rex was looking down, an asteroid came to town.
The impact was dramatic, earthquakes automatic.
And while volcanoes spewed ashy sparks that blocked the sun and made it dark,
Saltasaurus stumbled in the park, the day the dinos died. And they were singing:
Chorus:

They sought shelter in the summer swelter, the birds flew off all helter skelter: six miles diameter, falling fast.
It crashed into the ocean sand off the coast of the Yucatan, tsunamis and fires followed that epic splash.
The morning air smelled like perfume of sulfur and impending doom.
They woke dislocated, and soon they suffocated.
‘Cause reptiles can’t breathe toxic air, and they couldn’t go somewhere
To find a place of weather fair, the day the dinos died. And they were singing:
Chorus:

So there they were all o’er the place, many species lost in space, and time left to start again, they lacked.
So, Rex be nimble, Rex be quick, Rex outrun that hurtling brick, and the devastation caused by that impact.
And this became the last stage of the dinosauric age.
No saurian hatched from eggs had speedy enough legs.
And as the sky got dark as night, the world became as cold as ice.
An epitaph they had to write, the day the dinos died. And they were singing:
Chorus:

Later on, the mammals grew, and evolved into something new. They survived in a brand new land.
And birds soared through the scene carrying some dino genes, and insects buzzed and scurried
And fish still lived in the sea, along with toads and frogs and
Eventually came humans
But the dinos I admire lots, Tyrannosaur and Triceratops,
They took their last breath and then were lost, the day the dinos died. And they were singing:
Chorus:

There are some great lines like dinos/rhinos, although it's quite difficult to be sure that your song would be singable, even with considerable determination. But an admirable effort!!! BTW, did you check out Bob Gomez recent brilliant reworking of the OS.

The dinos are still here today. We just call them "birds".

The last verse is supposed to read: Later on, the mammals grew, and evolved into something new. They survived in a brand new land. And birds soared through the scene carrying some dino genes, and insects buzzed and scurried all around. And fish still lived in the sea, along with toads, frogs, and jellies. Eventually came humans, resources they’re consumin’. But the dinos I admire lots, Tyrannosaur and Triceratops, They took their last breath and then were lost, the day the dinos died. And they were singing:
