The Lyrics

A long long time ago
Maybe last year, 'round November
I was riding pretty high
When I was told by CNN
That it was sure, the fix was in
And we would be in charge for quite awhile

But Wednesday morning found me shattered
All of our work, it hadn't mattered
A lot of jaws hung gaping
Seems there is no escaping

I can't remember since that date
If I'd always harbored so much hate
But now I fear it's far too late
The day I lost my mind

Oh, why, why did the polls lie to me
How could something so egregious ever possibly be
The mainstream press had been a comfort, you see
Saying Trump was never in it to win
Told me that his chances were slim

Do you know what's going on
How could my hero's be so wrong
The New York Times misled me so
Can you believe this catastrophe
Our fate unfolded on T.V.
And the tears, like rain, began to flow

Well, I know for Sanders, you did yearn
Cause I saw your button, "Feel the Bern"
And though you're free to choose
We made sure Hillary couldn't lose

I was a precious snowflake malcontent
Just emerging from my parents dark basement
Where I never had to pay the rent
The day I lost my mind

I started crying, why, why did the polls lie to me
How could something so egregious ever possibly be
The mainstream press had been a comfort, you see
Saying Trump was never in it to win
Told me that his chances were slim

Now for eight years we'll be on our own
Oh, lost at sea and all alone
At least for now that's how it seems
We said goodbye to our king and queen
As they took off in the "First Marine"
With the promise that he would return

Oh, and what will we do till that day
Will we be nice and learn to play
Protest is all we know
Destruction's what we sow

Our leaders all inspired by Marx
Led demonstrations through the park
We sang spirituals in the dark
The day I lost my mind

We were crying, why, why did the polls lie to me
How could something so egregious ever possibly be
The mainstream press had been a comfort, you see
Saying Trump was never in it to win
Told me that his chances were slim

Russian hackers, WikiLeaker backers
Conspiracy, makes you think we're crackers
Both in mind and tone of skin
We fell hard on our ass
Our champ-i-on had a jaw of glass
While "The Donald" kept reviewing e-mails, past

Now the night time news reeked with despair
A ghastly pall had filled the air
Fireworks set to dance
Oh, but she never got the chance

Because something went wrong with the deal
When Comey turned out to be such a heel
They stuck her good, we heard her squeal
The day I lost my mind

We started crying, why, why did the polls lie to me
How could something so egregious ever possibly be
The mainstream press had been a comfort, you see
Saying Trump was never in it to win
Told me that his chances were slim

Oh, and there we were all in D.C.
A generation of P.C.
With no concept of how to act

So come on grab a pitchfork, grab a sign
Cover your faces, march in line
Shout out profanities until we win

Oh, and as I watched him take the oath
He's not my president, I quote
No meme is too extreme
Oh, revive that Hitler theme

And as I watched my dreams dissolve
With all hope lost and no resolve
My whole world, it ceased to revolve
The day I lost my mind

We were crying, why, why did the polls lie to me
How could something so egregious ever possibly be
The mainstream press had been a comfort, you see
Saying Trump was never in it to win
Told me that his chances were slim

I think a lot about a coup
The kind Madonna wants to do
But frankly I don't have the guts

I sit alone at night and brood
Where I obsess on how we're screwed
And I slowly waste away while going nuts

And when, at last, my throat's worn out
Too sore to muster one more shout
The epithets well spoken
A lot of glass lay broken

A sense of clam is drawing close
A melancholy turns morose
I'll add to all my other woes
The day I lost my mind

And we were crying, why, why did the polls lie to me
How could something so egregious ever possibly be
The mainstream press had been a comfort, you see
Saying Trump was never in it to win
Told me that his chances were slim

And we were crying, why, why did the polls lie to me
How could something so egregious ever possibly be
The mainstream press had been a comfort, you see
Saying Trump was never in it to win
Told me that his chances were slim
This is No. 5 of the big seven I have done, I can't remember what the last two are.

Magnificent. "Leaders inspired by Marx", "Russian hackers", "snowflakes". so many good lines. This song is a challenge I may never try again. I admire anyone who can do it well. You captured the spirit of the campaign and the reactions. Even the Hillary Clinton victory fireworks display that was never fired. Wonder what happened to all those shells. Don't let Madonna get hold of them. Best parody of the day. Maybe the week. Certainly the best on the subject.

Best of the week, Patrick? I'd put this up for Song of The Month, if we still had that competition. Who's done a better job than this in the month of January?
Onslaught - January 28, 2017 - Report this comment
Thank you, Patrick and Lennie. As I said I have done 5 of the big 7, but I can't remember what the other 2 are. I wonder if anyone knows to whole list.

Well, it's probably 4 years (or less if he gets impeached). I was also shocked by the result. Just saw the Simpsons episode again from 2000 where in a vision about the future they reference "President Trump". In any case, hopefully he won't be as bad as a lot of people fear. 555

Why would he be impeached? If Obama couldn't be impeached because of his skin color, neither can Trump after all, orange is the new black.
Larry Hensley - January 28, 2017 - Report this comment
Well, if he does something impeachable (with him that's very likely)

Well, if it's true he could easily do perjury in relation to the russian hookers, or Trump's russian ties or friendship with putin could be seen in a negative enough light. Its definitely possible he could abuse his power in impeachable ways in the future. It'd just have to be something that both houses of congress feel it's enough to impeach

Brilliant parody and paced just like the OS! I'll be thinking of this version whenever I see reports of damaged and deranged Democrats having a fit and protesters in the streets wrecking their own neighborhoods. Three Fives!

It's been a long time since I've heard anyone mention the "Big Seven". I've done three (American Pie, Edmund Fitzgerald, and Major General). The rest I don't know or like well enough to try. The Simpsons once featured a very funny segment showing Mr Burns singing "See My Vest". I wonder who first selected the Big Seven. My "Big Three" would be "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts", "Chimes of Freedom" (the full-length version) and "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young". I kind of like long, shifty songs. Leough aka Leo Keough has done the first two and I can't imagine anyone doing them better. I tried my hand at the third and got very little commentary, even though it is a political song about Donald Trump. Does anyone else have any ideas about songs that would be a real challenge to parody?
Onslaught - January 29, 2017 - Report this comment
So, basically, if Trump doesn't start WWIII with Russia, that would be grounds for impeachment?... Could you put that in a song? Maybe to Crazy Train.
Callmelennie - January 29, 2017 - Report this comment
"It's The End of The World as We Know iIt" was a real challenge for me. "We didn't Start the Fire" looks like a real bear. I dipped my toes in it once and then thought, "Too much work" Many Dylan tunes would be real difficult. I once got a couple of stanzas of "It's a Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall" then gave it up. I did do "Shelter from The Storm' That took a while ...... Not sure why "Bohemian" and "Supercal" are in the Big 7; they're really not that difficult.

And let's not forget "Along Comes Mary" by the Association. Now there's an intricate rhyming scheme for you, Very few people have done it.
Larry Hensley - January 29, 2017 - Report this comment
Ok, whatever. It might be overall unlikely but I and I've heard others both in the media and not in the media say it's definitely possible that Trump will overstep his bounds at some point and do something he's not supposed to do and then congress would probably like holding impeachment hearings. Let's just leave it at that
Onslaught - January 29, 2017 - Report this comment
Oh, well, if the media said it... blah, blah, blah.
Patrick - January 31, 2017 - Report this comment
"Along Comes Mary" has a very fast delivery that defies understanding the lyrics, at least from listening to it on AM radio. I think I tried "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" and wasn't totally satisfied with the result. "We Didn't Start The Fire" and "One Week" are both high-speed delivery songs with very hard to follow lyrics. Leough did do "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" and it was a masterpiece. Haven't seen him on the site lately. Anyone in touch with him or know if something happened?
