The Lyrics

I wrote this shortly after the hurricane hit in Sept 2005. It doesn't have as many verses as the original song, but given the fact I don't sing very well, no one I sang it for ever complained!
Not so long ago,
It seemed U.S. ran the show,
In places near and far away.
Then Mother Nature sent a sign,
Perhaps to get us back in line
Or maybe it was just not our day

A fury rose to break the calm,
No terrorist or dirty bomb,
They called an evacuation,
Left the poor to man the station

So when Katrina hit the coast
Those with the least would lose the most,
In toxic waste they raised a toast
The day New Orleans died.

They were singing-
Why why did Katrina let fly-
Wiped out Gulfport to Biloxi in the blink of an eye,
The levies broke and left the water head high,
Why did all those people just die?
Why did all those people just die?

The Gulf Coast- many call their home
With big casinos and the Superdome,
We thought we owned what the planet lent.
It drew those with and those without
To live the dream or to eek it out,
Until Katrina came to get the rent.

After the looting stopped and the people drowned
The Army finally rolled in town,
Four days had all gone by-
Isn't anyone wondering why?

And so next time you have a chance to vote
Better choose someone who can drive a boat
"Cuz Bush just left us in the moat
The day New Orleans died.

And we were singing-
Why why did Katrina let fly-
Wiped out Gulfport to Biloxi in the blink of an eye,
The levies broke and left us wondering why
Why did all those people just die?
Why did all those people just die?

Time will pass and memories fade,
There will be a plaque where wreaths are laid
For all those lost those fateful days.
People will come from all around,
Come back to gaze upon the town
Familiar but changed in many ways.

But many of those who did survive,
With nothing left except their lives,
Shout in anger for their loss and pain
But you can't declare war on a hurricane

Many want to point the blame
Whose fault it was when Katrina came
But she was just a pawn in Nature's game
The day New Orleans died.

And left us singing-
Why why did Katrina let fly-
Wiped out Gulfport to Biloxi in the blink of an eye,
The levies broke and left us wondering why
Why did all those people just die?
Tell me why did all those people just die?
