The Lyrics
I remember when this song first came out. I think I had one of the earliest 45 rpm pressings from 1979. Rather grim. In the original lyrics it is obvious that Grandma did not survive. However, in the video, she turns up, alive and well, to the cheers of her family. I imagine a similar outcome.
Grandma got run over by a reindeer
She has been laid up with broken bones
We thought there was no hope for recovery
But I just heard today she's coming home
She'd been minding her own business
As she strolled beside the street
But then a sudden altercation
Left her mangled 'neath a herd of cloven feet
Someone called the paramedics
Who administered first aid
Rushed her to the trauma center
Where a critical prognosis soon was made
Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Spent a whole year lying on her back
She just bought herself a thirty-thirty
She's locked and loaded, ready to attack
Now we're rather scared for Grandma
What she's up to we can't tell
Is she watching out for Santa?
If he lands upon our roof, she'll give him hell
She's dressed in her Christmas camo
A stocking cap in ninja black

she survived in the movie, too. but yes, at least the original song was much darker. which makes granny's revenge here all the sweeter! if you haven't seen it yet, check out a parody I co-wrote a few years back, called "Grandma Murdered Santa And His Reindeer" grandma was similarly violent towards Santa & his reindeer crew, but not for vengeance, it was just someone's violent granny! 5s
I left a comment on your site. Can you believe it's been ten years. I think that's how long I've been writing here. I was actually looking for a different set of lyrics when I found this perennial favorite and cranked it out in one session. Hope some more people see it.
