One of the reasons my screen name is Callmelennie is that kids in high school did in fact call me that, in reference to the character Lennie from Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men"; no doubt because I was pretty big as a teenager. Thing is, I embraced the name; didn't take it as an insult at all. Now, as for this song -- there's something of a mournful tone to the OS, especially at the end, which I will utilize here to craft a lament for the tragic fate of Lennie Small, who was going to be a tender of rabbits, but instead died on the bank of the Salinas River -- just for stroking a woman's hair

Of course, the other reason I use "Callmelennie" is to underscore the striking similarities between my two favorite works of literature, Melville's "Moby Dick" and Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men." Both works involve main characters on an obsessive quest -- one for a whale to kill; the other for a rabbit to feed

There was a character named Candy in the novel, who had amassed enough savings to turn George and Lennie pipe dream of a farm into a real possibility, if only for a instant. And hey, didja catch the reference to Robert Burns' line "The best laid schemes o' mice and men gang' aft agley" at the end. Of course you did. I'm told Burns had George and Lennie in mind when he penned that line

Good one. I was a Steinbeck fanatic in the eighth grade and read the rather short novel in one day.

We read the novel inSophomore English, Porfle, and of course, everybody immediatetly started calling me Lennie. Thing is, it was completedly expected, so I was ready for it

Thanks for leading me here. Well-crafted work. I read the story many years ago and didn't quite get it - still don't. Maybe I should try again. Thanks for the insight in to your nickname - people have been called worse. I won't compare our parodies as Lennie might do something bad again, lol.
