The Lyrics

I've been spending a lot of time lately writing a comic memoir of my high school football playing days, hence I haven't been spinning many tunes. But here's a tribute to a kid named Devon Allen, who is the greatest athlete in my school's history. Not only is he a possible All American wide receiver, but with a time of 13.35 in the high hurdles as a Junior, he is a legitimate prospect for a medal in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, provided he stops playing football and focuses on this event. So this is a song about his conundrum. More explanatory notes at bottom
Devon burns the corner like a clown
They call this play frequent
Cause they like his game
He's the linchpin for the finest O in town

Devon, Devon likes his hurdles
There's talent there, they say
Spends his days bounding
Over barriers that don't slow his way

He was torn 'tween Rio and the Pros
On a summer's day when the DV coach said Broncs were dead
And their season's done
I'm entrusted to guide this son today

And he shall be Devon
And he shall go deep, man
And he shall be Devon
U Michigan's the family plan
And he shall be Devon
And he shall be the deep man
HE. SHALL. BE. DEVON!

Devon gets doubled on ev'ry down
The Bronco offense thrives
Bruggman blows up the zones all day
Sits in the pocket launching deep flies

But Devon, he wants to go to Rio
Leaving Bruggman high and dry
Takes to the track and goes hurdling
While Broncos, Broncos slowly slide

He was torn 'tween Rio and the Pros
On an autumn day when the Huskies coach say Broncs were dead
And their season's done
I'm entrusted to guide this one today

And he shall be Devon
And he shall go for gold, man
And he shall be Devon
Though he's blowing up the Bronco plan (Woo!)
And he shall be Devon
And he shall get the gold, man
HE. SHALL. BE. DEVON!

Broncos -- team nickname, obviously. DV, Huskies -- archrivals to the Broncos. Bruggman -- Bronco QB Tyler Bruggman, a major college prospect. "Deep fly" -- pass pattern where a receiver runs straight down the field and beats the defender on sheer speed

"Devon burns the corner like a clown" means he's making a fool of the opposing cornerback. Also, slight mistake: Devon's best time in the hurdles is 13:52; the 13:35 time is the world record for his age group. Still, you can see the potential there

Nicely written way to honor a fellow alumni

He's not an alumni yet, AFW. He's just a Senior

Good pacing and syllable matching on an OS that I actually know... :)

Urgent Devon update! My song was somewhat prophetic as Devon Allen incurred a high ankle sprain in the opening round of the playoffs. His absence caused the Broncos to struggle to win a bruising quarterfinal game; at which point a depleted Bronco team was shut out in the semifinal game by a team which they had beaten 54-28 in the regular season ...... On a positive note, the team scored 562 points in 14 games (548 in the 12 games that Devon played in) which was the leading point total in the State and smashed the school record for points. Moreover, QB Curt Bruggman "blew up zones" to the tune of 33 TD passes

Important Devonian news flash -- Devon Allen, the subject of this parody and no doubt inspired by it, scored 2 TD's in Oregon's 46-27 rout of Michigan State last week, including a 70 yard pass reception TD. Meanwhile, last spring, as a freshman, he won the NCAA high hurdles championship. ... Which just makes the conundrum (Olympics v NFL) laid out in this song ever more acute

Devon Olympic update! Devon Allen, the subject of this parody, just won the 110 meter Finals at the US Olympic trials with ease. And seeing as how Jamaicans dont seen to care about the high hurdles, this makes him an odds on favorite to win a medal at the Rio Olympics. He managed to do this even though he suffered a knee injury playing in the 2014 Rose Bowl.

Some of you, if you've been watching the Olympics, may now recognize the name Devon Allen. He was all over network TV last night as he placed fifth in the 110 meter finals. Now would he have won a medal last night if he had not been injured playing football two years ago? Would he have kicked those two hurdles if he had gotten some international racing experience in 2015? And so the Devon conundrum goes on

This Devon Allen conundrum about football v hurdles keeps popping up ten years after I do this parody!! After finishing just out of the medal count in two separate Olympics (2016 and 2020) he signs a contract to play for the Eagles. Next thing you know he runs third fastest time ever and is winning every race he enters. So now hes back to square one
