The Lyrics

Secrets in the Chamber:
Find the snake hide.
Running through the tunnel,
Damp and dark, dank and tight!

But if you don’t find her now,
When her very life is at stake—
Basilisk slithers in! And
Can you ever beat the snake? (Massive is that snake!)
And if you don’t free her now,
If you can’t reverse her mistake—
Did you see Riddle grinning? (“Yes, it is I!”)
“Boy, you’ll never beat the snake!” (Scarier than Snape!)

She lies in the Chamber;
Out goes her light!
Drawn into its shadows:
Damn her soul! Damn her life!
Snake, it claims her:
Damn its fangs! Damn its eyes!

But if you can’t rouse her now,
If you cannot shake her awake—
Did you hear Riddle saying
That you’ll never beat the snake? (“Dumbledore’s a fake!”)
And if you can’t help her now,
Your entire school is at stake!
Still, you hear Riddle claiming (“I’ll never die!”)
That you’ll never beat the snake! (“Mudbloods I’ll erase!”)
And if you can’t save her now,
And give Riddle’s diary an ache—
He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named says, (“Boy, you must die!”)
“Boy, you’ll never beat the snake!” (“I’ll dance at your wake!”)

(instrumental break)

Hat…save us together! (Dodging in the shadows!)
Sword…save us together! (Fighting in the shadows!)
Bird…save us together! (Flying through the shadows!)
Love…save us together! (Magic in the shadows!)

Well done, Melanie. I like the multiple 'snake' rhymes you used ('Scarier than Snape' stood out for me). And I can relate. I still remember reading through that section of the second book feeling extremely scared at the time. Did you read through the series, and are you excited for the 6th movie?

Excellent parody.. though as it happens you did stumble on one of my (many!) annoyances with the Harry Potter books: a basilisk isn't a snake... at least, not until JKR wanted to shoe-horn one into the story. I've done one myself on this subject (to the AAF version of "Smooth Criminal"), so can appreciate it all the more :-)

AGES...I do love me some Harry Potter. This was super funny to me, but was well paced, and as I said, tells a story that I love. So...nice work.

Nice job Melanie. I must admit I've read all of the HP books, as well as I've listened to them on CD on long trips (kids ...*shrugs*)
I liked what you did with the answer lines. Another thing I like about this, and your writing in general, is your ability to use imagery to create the mood and texture.

I'm a big HP fan so I got a lot out of this (although I did have the same thought as Phil about the basilisk/snake). Well written.

Why is it all Fleetwood Mac Originals manage to drag on and lack lyrics at the same time, maxed what you had Mel, good job . . .Familiar with the story too.

Thanks, all! I didn't get into HP at all until a couple of years ago. My niece Joanne loves the books! Her mother, my sister Elena (who died of cancer this past November) took the kids to the "Deathly Hallows Eve" celebration at the local B&N in 2007, and I went for a couple of hours. By then I'd seen the first two HP movies on TV, and the 3rd--which I love!--on video. I saw Movie 5 on the big screen, and eventually saw the 4th on DVD. Now recently, seeing Chambers again, I noticed some symbolism that would've made Freud proud. More recently I saw again all five movies, and this month I finally read one of the novels, Chambers. I also read a few chapters of Sorcerer's Stone at the B&N, and plan to get it from the library as soon as I can get to a branch that has a copy!

I forgot to mention: I have read two books in which Christian authors defend HP against its naysayers, citing the Christian messages hidden within the stories. The books are How Harry Cast His Spell by John Granger (no relation to Hermione), and The Gospel According to Harry Potter by Connie W. Neal. I applaud both these authors for investigating the novels themselves rather than judging them at face value. Granger's book Unlocking Harry Potter takes a more literary analysis of the works.
