The Lyrics

It's been a while since I did "The Wreck." But the Republicans seem determined to wreck themselves.
The legend lives on from Alaska on down
of the big flake they call Sarah Palin.
The chick, it is said, brings 'em back from the dead
but she's really big part of what's ailin'!

With a load of bullcrap, the Republican chaps
think McCain was, to their ways, quite empty.
Fealty, did not give to "true conservatives"
when the votes of November came early.

Barack was the pride of Chicago's South Side
and Hawaii -- and some would say Kenya.
His victory complete, don't know who would've beat
but their ideal nominee, they ain't seen ya!

Concluding their meet at their Denver retreat
did Obama give speech at Invesco.
Republicans chirped that this liberal twerp
would bow to Nancy from San Francisco!

The windbags in St. Paul made tattletale sound
about John McCain, they'd be electing.
But they're so full of hate, angry, miffed and irate
'twas the votes in November rejecting!

Fred Thompson's asleep, Giuliani's a creep
and Mitt Romney flip-flops and he's Mormon.
And Mike Huckabee, taxes raised, yessirree
so no unity were these guys formin'!

When Convention time came, the old sailor's on deck
sayin', "Fellas, on reform I'll feed ya."
On September 24, the market crashed more
they said, "Johnny, the cure's that we greed ya!"

The debate was wired in, McCain might not come in
and Ole Miss wondered what was his quarrel.
McCain had no fun, much less than did "That One."
The election for right wing's imperiled!

Does anyone know where your chance to win goes
when Election Day lasts just four hours?
Not 36 days when Bush had got away
but in Blue State votes we all got showers!

The right wing realized that their dreams had capsized
in Iraq, on Wall Street and Wasilla.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
on which Joe the fake Plumber will bill ya!

Two million came, and Aretha did sing
and Obama was inaugurated.
The G.O.P. steams at the death of their dreams
and his "socialist" views they have hated!

And farther below, Ms. Olympia Snowe
and Ms. Susan Collins gave him boosting.
And the big Pennsy dork who helped stop Robert Bork
shows their chickens are now home and roosting!

In a musty old hall in Minnesota, Saint Paul
came the Franken votes from the court's barrel.
And the 60th vote, they'd now like to grab throat:
Arlen Specter leaves right wing imperiled!

The legend lives on, the Prez says, "Yes we can!"
on the banks of the River Potomac.
Republicans, it's said, swear they'll never be dead
but right now, they've got such upset stomach!
"Never interfere with the enemy when he is in the process of destroying himself." -- Niccolo Machiavelli

Well written, MP. Good to still see you writing, and to epic songs like this. It really is too bad that the muse of so many has left office. Honestly, what will Will Tong do with himself now?

A difficult song to work with. Well done. Summarizes the election campaign in a masterfully poetic way. The Democrats actually believe in what they preach. The Republicans believe in nothing but compromise with the Democrats. They'll never win until they actually stand for something and work to enact it when they have the opportunity. Four years from now so many voters will be hopelessly dependent on government handouts that the process will never be reversed. The United States will join the Edmund Fitzgerald in a silent tomb.

Why don't you stop writing this anti right wing crap? It's booooooring. maybe the admins should ban you. Do you sit at home every day in the dark listening to your old 70's records?

Good one, Michael

Thanks to Glen, Alvin, Mark and AFW. Don't worry about Will, because, the occasional parody about writers' block aside, the material never stops coming. Patrick: While I disagree with your political stand, I appreciate that you're arguing in a rational fashion. As for Right Wing Man, I won't stop writing it, it's not crap, it's not boring, if the admins were going to ban me they would have done it by now, and it's not my side of the divide that's in the dark.

Right wing man must have slept with Ann Coulter.

I have to say that while I don't take party sides, Sarah Palin truly scared me, she really scared me. I don't know how you master this particular song the way you do, the rhyme scheme for me is so hard to pick out, but you seem to know it inside and out, impressive write Michael, and the opening lines were just plain funny. . .good recap of last year
John Jenkins - May 06, 2009 - Report this comment
Very, very good title. The first line of the last verse would have been more accurate if you had made it rhyme:

The legend lives on, the Prez says, "Yes we con!"

It's something quite predictable... but in the end, we're right... I hope you got the slime of your life...

While they're at it, I wish they'd expel Colin Powell, too. That warmongering mass-murdering... Oh, wait, warmongering and mass-murdering are back in vogue with this administration. Never mind.

I know people are gonna hate me for writing this, this parody was great, as are virtually all of yours, and I agree with the content and sentiment 100%. Here are some 5s, and I too would have been banned a long time ago if they had wanted to.

Waay TMGLTM (including John Jenkins', lol!) and the Thompson/Giuliani verse was good. Agree/disagree, no matter, great write, Mike.... but I don't exactly class Arlen Spector as 'Right Wing", and he himself said he was doing it only cuz he thought he couldn't win the Rep primary. Hardly a major ideological switch.

@ Tim Hall: I wouldn't mind sleeping with Ann Coulter. She'd be screaming, but not about politics.

@ right-wing man: You don't know this, but there was a time when "conservative" meant "adhering to the strict construction of the Constitution". Now, go read its First Amendment, since you haven't already. Admin bans on one particular political POV? Try the Islamic, Communist, Nazi, Banana-Dictatorship, etc. countries. I often don't agree with what Michael says, but I'll defend to the death his right to say it (as my ancestors did literally, in WW II). I'll bet you never heard that quote before, either, didja? (Hint - Last name begins with a V.)

Securiy code: "cum"? They should ban ChuckyG! (kidding!)

Tommy: These "true conservatives" probably think Voltaire was gay.
TT - May 16, 2009 - Report this comment
Michael: LOL! .. *True* conservatives would look in the Constitution and find no grounds for the Government to interfere in private, consenting adult behavior. Unfortunately, the last true conservative of note was Barry Goldwater, and those ideals pretty much went with him.

Turns out the Voltaire "quote" isn't really. Wikipedia isn't always reliable, but there's a good source backing up this part:

"The most oft-cited Voltaire quotation is apocryphal. He is incorrectly credited with writing, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” These were not his words, but rather those of Evelyn Beatrice Hall, written under the pseudonym S. G. Tallentyre in her 1906 biographical book The Friends of Voltaire. Hall intended to summarize in her own words Voltaire's attitude towards Claude Adrien Helvétius and his controversial book De l'esprit, but her first-person expression was mistaken for an actual quotation from Voltaire. Her interpretation does capture the spirit of Voltaire’s attitude towards Helvetius; it had been said Hall's summary was inspired by a quotation found in a 1770 Voltaire letter to an Abbot le Roche, in which he was reported to have said, “I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.” Nevertheless, scholars believe there must have again been misinterpretation, as the letter does not seem to contain any such quote."

It's still a good summation of his attitude toward free speech, and a good maxim no matter who did or didn't say it. (should be a banner at the top of AIR, lol).

Gay? The same source claims he had a long-running affair with a married woman, with the apparent full approval of her husband. *Really* interesting guy.
