The Lyrics

My favorite Halloween story ever!
The legend lives on from the classics on down
From the author called Washington Irving
This legend has ailed as an old spooky tale
With a horseman that's headless and creeping
In town of New York state known as Sleepy Hollow
A new schoolmaster came from New England
His name's Ichabod Crane and he's tall and not vain
And he gives all his pupils life lessons

Mr. Crane had a crush on young rich farm girl
By the name of Katrina Van Tassel
As romance begins, there's a bachelor conflict
So the fight for Katrina's a hassle
Now this other guy he was brawny and sly
But he hated Ichabod with some pissed moans
He yearned for the Katrina for life
The jock was referred to as Brom Bones

Late one afternoon a messenger came
To the schoolhouse with an invitation
And Ichabod accepted Van Tassel's invite
To a party on their big plantation
He borrowed a horse from a passing farmer
An old plow nag whose name is Gunpowder
Brom also showed up on his steed black and sleek
Daredevil's quite sly and has power

When suppertime finished and the dance was at an end
The guests all gathered 'round the fire
The tales that they old mostly haunted and cold
Made Ichabod scared as hellfire
When Brom's turn came he told of a ghost
From the churchyard a former war hessian
Who lost his poor head to a cannonball shot
The specter called the headless horseman

As Ichabod Crane headed home late that night
Brom's story continued to haunt him
He heard many sounds that gave him a fright
He thought that this goblin had called him
But later as all through the mire he rode
He saw a dark horse and a figure
The figure was definitely decapitated
And it chased Ichabod as its trigger

As Master Crane rode for his life and home
He found there was something that struck him
The headless horseman indeed had his head
In the form of a flickering pumpkin
As soon they came to the bridge by the church
Ichabod thought the phantom would vanish
But just to his luck the pumpkin was thrown
And it bashed him from Earth he was banished

In the church the next day a wedding occured
And Katrina proposed to Brom Bones
The mystery of Ichabod Crane is rumored
But who knows he could be in a safe zone
The legend lives on from the classics on down
From the author called Washington Irving
This legend has ailed as an old spooky tale
With a horseman that's headless and creeping

How did I miss this? Around Amiright, the OS is considered one of the "Big Seven" -- seven songs that, due to their length and/or complexity, serve as standards that mark you as a master of parody ... Geez, if you can do this one, you can do just about any song

More familiar with the story than the original song! Be interesting who CML thinks the "big 7" are (I did The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden)
