The Lyrics

In case anyone asks, yes I know the original was by Bob Dylan. I just happen to like the Joan Baez version better. So much better, in fact, that my Yahoo Group (link below) is the first place on the Internet ever to reproduce the lyrics as Baez actually sang them, which, if you ever had her "Diamonds and Rust" album, you may recall was quite a bit different from the way they were printed on the album jacket.
They sat together in the yard
They were barking really hard
Their noise annoyed a security guard
At a rich neighbor's estate
He walked in through the gate
Even though it was late
And silenced them with a pungent can of mace

They walked down by the old canal
Had too much booze, I remember well
I saw them from the posh hotel
Ram into a neon light
A cop saw the same sight
But they wanted to fight
They recovered in jail from a pungent can of mace

A saxophone someplace nearby played
Bill Clinton was performing at the arcade
A man peered through a beat up shade
With a Smith and Wesson in his hand
He was noticed by the band
On the pavement he did land
Brought down by a pungent can of mace

He woke up, the cell was bare
He didn't see anyone anywhere
He told himself he didn't care
He pushed the window bars open wide
Then he heard footsteps inside
He was just a little late
Once more hit with a pungent can of mace

He heard water splash on the locks
Small waves whispered to the rocks
He hunted her down by the waterfront docks
Where the revellers all come in
Perhaps he'll screw her once again
He didn't want to wait
She surprised him with a pungent can of mace

The judge told me it was a crime
To defend myself, so I did time
The laws, they are so full of grime
And one should not tempt fate
That's how it is in a police state
But I found out too late
Blame it on a pungent can of mace
