The Lyrics

Who has never felt loss? And who knows what chain of events can result in one act of thoughtlessness, carelessness, covetousness, and greed? A loved one, a possession, a part of us can get ripped away in an instant, and how that can completely change our world. Here's a story of a simple banjo picker caught up in fate. The song speaks for itself.
THEY STOLE MY BANJO I'M IN MOURNING

My brand new strings lie on my bed
I’ll never pick and grin again
There’s no need to lose my head
It was not I committed sin
But still I get down on my knees
My tears are dried; God hear my pleas.

They stole my Banjo; I’m in mourning … Banjo
I feel so weak without you near me … Banjo
They took you Banjo; I’m in mourning … Banjo
They cruelly stole my joy … from me

The Opry’s bright lights they will fade
There’ll be no duelin’ anymore
In grassy meadows let me lay
Among my long lost friends of yore
And though I’ll l never reach those heights
My soul will soar up through the night

They stole my Banjo; I’m in mourning … Banjo
I feel so weak without you near me … Banjo
They took you Banjo; I’m in mourning … Banjo
They cruelly stole my joy
You were more than a toy … to me

I’ll throw my fears away
No more tears … Bahn-Ahn-Ahn-Jo!

They stole my Banjo; I’m in mourning … Banjo
I feel so weak without you near me … Banjo

They took you Banjo; I’m in mourning … Banjo
I feel so weak without you near me … Banjo
They took my Banjo; I’m in mourning … Banjo
I feel so weak without you near me … Banjo

(Repeat and fade)
Hold on to life and love. Don't throw them away, and don't let anyone take them away.

Sad Lament - I hope it didn't really happen

I think you have a resonator here, man. ;)
Ban Jo-vi - August 27, 2009 - Report this comment
Trying to kiss up to Fiddle's butt, are you? (Not that I blame you - it's worth it, believe me!)... Love the OS; loved the irony of trivializing it. although I know it must have meant a lot to you...

Perfect execution, 555 absolutely, and I think you're ready to surpass perfection: Throw some additional subs in the end repeats, as moi's "Mrs. Brown" did today, though on a much more trivial "scale", of course. IOW, exploit every opportunity for another pun or funny sub. I'm grinnin' an' pickin' AIR's next top-echelon star.

re: outtro: The former will be taken from all of us eventually; unfortunately, sometimes the latter leaves on its own. Still wise counsel, and if the banjo was a metaphor (lol) for something greater that you lost, deepest condolences.

LSUFreek: I always said truth is stranger than fiction ... and vice-versa........ Thanks for the v/c Leo! Very glad you enjoyed it!......................... Timmy1000: We're all storytellers where I come from. That said, life is not for sissies................. Thanks Fiddlegirl (I think). Resonator? I really enjoy your selection of words, but I'm not sure what that means here except that maybe you mean it strikes a chord? Ban Jo-vi: Haha! Punny name. Do people often comment under multiple names here though? No matter. I do appreciate all the detail of your comments and the kind and generous encouragement. But this kissing up to FG? Did I do that somewhere? I can usually pick up on a joke pretty easily but that threw me. What's funny is that (with me) what you see is what you get, and I always tell the truth ... whenever convenient (that's a joke).

AFAIK, the punning on one's own nick was started by your humble servant, then extended by the same servant to punning in general. A few others have picked up on it, esp. when they did not wish to comment under their "real" nicks (for legitimate reasons, not cowardly or malicious), but also just to be clever and funny. (Hope this was?) ... No anonymity intended here; the style of writing and commentary (prolix, pedantic), not to mention the nick, is usually an easy read as to the author -- as it's meant to be. The more puns, the merrier, right?

The "Fiddle" bit was one of my poorer puns, an allusion to the somewhat distant relationship between the banjo and the fiddle, i. e. "You're writing a song about a banjo to kiss up to the Fiddle girl". Hey, nobody in the majors bats 1.000 or even .500, but yeah, that one was pretty poor. With me, what you see almost always has some sort of hidden reference, pun, or joke in it -- a good number of which get lost, alas, but I amuse myself. :)

The next step in your pledging to the secret society: putting line breaks in comments to avoid the dreaded "wall of text". Type the left angle bracket or "less than" sign, the letters BR in upper-case, and the right angle bracket or "greater than" sign. No spaces in between. That will produce a new line. To make a new paragraph with a blank line in between, just do two of the above in a row. Like this: [BR][BR] except use the angle brackets instead of square ones. I can't demo that, or it will parse as code instead of showing up. I think you get the idea. Cheers!

LOL @ "strikes a chord"... a resonator is a piece added to the back of a banjo-- most typically for bluegrass players-- that amplifies the sound. Most old-time "banjers" (for clawhammer, frailing, drop-thumb etc) are open-backed. I actually have one of the latter styles, which I intend to learn to play *one of these days* :)

Thanks again TT. Yes, I figured it was someone like you with the punny name but wasn't sure since I haven't been around that long.

I haven't had to use HTML in comments elsewhere and some sites say not to use them (I suppose to make them more compact) so I'm glad you mentioned that. I actually was going to try *P* to see if that worked but was reluctant because you can't edit here and didn't want to confuse.

Oh, and I did think about the bango/fiddle relationship too so don't fret about making a poor pun. Sometimes my most enjoyable ones are the ones people don't get.

Oh, OK FG. I knew about the electronic gadget (somewhat) but didn't associate it with a fiddle.

Coincidentally, a friend of mine and I saw a couple of street musicians about a year or so ago in NO (they did a couple of songs for us and we had a nice chat) and the girl played an old fiddle. I think one was House of the Rising Sun. Took a few pics but they came out poor in the darkness. No resonation but a little osculation (on the cheek) before I left. ;-)
metaphorsbwithu - August 28, 2009 - Report this comment
FG. That should have been " didn't associate it with a banjo" of course.
Guy - August 28, 2009 - Report this comment
Forsby - I'm pickin' this fer grinnin' . =;-)

The word "Banjo" always reminds me of the words for toilet in both Spanish and Japanese. Spanish is "baño" pronounced ban-yo and Japanese is benjo - both words I have used in parody when suited. So have you checked the public restrooms and outhouses for it? I'm not saying that this parody belongs in those places - just an observation on my part.

I feel your pain since you obviously slept with your banjo as the parody alludes to in the first line. Perhaps she strummed off with some highfalutin electronic guitar. Sorry for your loss. But happy to bestow fives upon this fine write.

The line breaks are the only exception to the legend right below this comment box: " No links or other code allowed". They *do* make for easier reading, no?

Forbidding is not to make them more compact, but to prevent scumbags from entering malicious code that could result in cross-site scripting and other attacks. Also to prevent spamming, although between you and me, (don't tell ChuckyG I told you this, OK? lol), you can enter a URL of one of your songs or someone else's, so long as it's in AIR. You just can't hyperlink it. (You can hyperlink them inside the song itself, again, inside AIR only). The site stays amazingly spam-free, and ChuckyG does an excellent job of keeping it that way and in running it in general.

Well Guy, thanks for the kind words but, although I've had my share of loss like everyone, I remain at heart a storyteller and someone who describes what I see around me. I think it's a good sign that people react in a way that it makes them think something is real or based on reality (and I believe there should be some reality in all art) and evokes feelings of all kinds. That's basically what everyone who writes and creates is trying to do, I think. Of course I could be wrong. I only know me. I've always liked that song and tried to do it justice although in a playful way.

Again, TT, thanks for explaining things so well. That makes so much sense and it helps to get a fear of where you're treading and what ettiquette is appropriate. People overall seem to be very generous here which, as you probably know, is not always the case in my experience.

Ugh ... that should be get a "feel" not "fear" TT. I'm tired!

Based on numerous reviews of his parodies and comments, I'd venture a guess that TT likes to try to "get a feel" at every opportunity. :D

Boy, Fiddlegirl! You can certainly hand out the shell-ackings (sorry if all the turtle puns have been exhausted already). Remind me never to get under your skin, especially with a bow in your hand. ;-)

Of course, where I come from, most of us start out acting like gentlemen, and many of us (sadly) continue to act that way. I've always rather looked in awe at the rascals amongst us ... especially the ones who get away with it. That said, I'm sure TT is mostly just misunderstood. ;-)
TT - August 30, 2009 - Report this comment
I would so love to get under FG's skin hehe... This is a pun site above all else, although you're absolutely correct in not taking liberties until you get to know someone well enough to know that they won't take offense... and I don't believe I've seen "shell-acking! Congrats! I'm sure there are many more turtle puns awaiting fertile turtle minds.

psst... you've missed a good bit of such byplay cuz of the "punny nick" syndrome FG and I often use in such situations. Yes, she's a nym-phony-maniac, although I promised I'd never tell :) ... but we've reached that level that I LOL'd at her comment above -- and I've "dished" (private joke, but I can point you to it if you care) it out to her in spayeds as well :)

Misunderstood? In song jokes and puns, yes. In lewd double-entendres, no, I mean every word of them hehe.;-)

btw, feel free (others I charge) to email via the CAPTCHA at the bottom of my songs (not the sig link, which takes you to my silly little web site, although it has a Guide to Perfect Parody Pacing, not that you need it. ... Sorry about the captcha rigmarole, but I hate spambots with a passion. So any other tips, tricks, rules, etiquette, etc. .... or just to say hello. Work and leisure hours are highly irregular, so reply might come in ten minutes or a number of days... but welcome. Cheers!

Thanks, TT. I'll try to keep on my toes. Yes, I think I saw the link already and took a peek. I'll take advantage of that pacing guide anyway, although I have to admit I've always had a pretty good sense of ... timing.

"Shell-ackings"? Brilliant!

How wonderful to meet a gentleman... a vanishing breed, sir, but still very much appreciated by this FiddleLady.

As per TT's comments, rest assured that he gives as good as he gets, and mostly better. (I have the scars to prove it!) But it's all in good fun.

Lastly, "I have to admit I've always had a pretty good sense of ... timing."........... ROFL!!! I'd say you're "In", man! ;)
