The Lyrics

Here is a short story on how I sailed with two friends on their yacht from Tallinn, Estonia to Helsinki, Finland, last weekend. The weather was awful - it was full gale of force 8 - but I enjoyed every minute. al-Shaheen is an excellent yacht and seen much worse. It was the fastest ride I've ever made from Tallinn to Helsinki onboard a yacht.
Waking up at ten to six, I drunk a cup of tea
John and Jenny were preparing the boat for the ride
John, he turned the diesel on for early morning sea
I put my oilskins on and then climbed outside

We hoisted up the mainsail and we had the jib unfurled
Soon the wind at the Tallinn Bay rose and gathered force
and the weather, it turned murky and the waves of Baltic hurled
I acted deckhand while John, he kept us the course

Sailing's just another word for freedom of the seas,
I picked my guitar and Jenny, she brewed us tea -
The weather was a full gale, but with John I was in ease
You know feeling good was good enough for me,
Me and John and Jenny aboard al-Shaheen!

From the lighthouse of the Tallinn to Helsinki Caisson tall,
John and Jenny shared the secrets of my soul.
And I grinned when breaking wave soaked me and wind on shrouds did howl
Jenny's tea and coffee did keep us from cold

We arrived to Finnish waters with just halfway furled foresail
The wind was thirty-four knots and waves were high
We sailed on with full hull speed like flying on falcon's wings
it was half past noon we had NJK at sight -

Sailing's just another word for freedom of the seas,
I read the charts and John, he did us steer -
The weather was a full gale, but with Jenny I was in ease
You know feeling good was good enough for me,
Me and John and Jenny aboard al-Shaheen!

La la la, la la la la, la la la, la la la la
La la la la la aboard al-Shaheen.
La la la la la, la la la la la
La la la la la, aboard al-Shaheen, la.

One of my very first parodies on this site was "Me and Abu Ma'aghi" with the classic refrain, "Islam's just another word for nothing left to choose."

Seems like someone let the infamous Mister Number Ones Man free off the asylum.

Callmelennie: al-Shaheen is the name of John's and Jenny's yacht. It means "peregrine falcon".
Funster - July 07, 2014 - Report this comment
Maybe people just got tired of your boring nautical nonsense. Even your title stinks

I've been away for a couple weeks working at a fireworks store. Helping Americans celebrate our independence by blowing up paper tubes made by Chinese slave labor. As for Funster, show me your parody. What sort of hobbies and passions do you enjoy? How close, linguistically, are Finnish and Estonian? Can you speak to each other without an interpreter or a third language (lingua franca)?
Susanna Viljanen - July 08, 2014 - Report this comment
Okay, Funster, show us your parody and what you are able to. There are many pooches who dare to bark from the woods but won't dare to face the hounds on the open.

Patrick: I can read written Estonian and understand it fully. My native Finnish dialect differs from spoken Estonian too much for me to be able to fully understand spoken Estonian. But the Finnish dialect from Turku is close enough to Estonian for Turku natives to be completely fluent in both spoken and written Estonian.

Patrick and Susanna: It's a habit for some around here to lash out at their anonymous critics by challenging them to reveal their parodies. This is demagoguery -- and that is probably why the critics write under pseudonyms. Are the criticisms invalid if the critics don't reveal their identities by showing their work? Of course not, especially if the criticism is on the mark. Some modern literary critics who influence standards while never qualifying for Nobels in Literature are Stanley Fish, Harold Bloom, and Lionel Trilling.

I will add that anyone complaining about receiving 1s deserves more 1s for lacking maturity.

Anon, if you talk the talk you'd also better be able to walk the walk. We Finns do not mind constructive criticism, but we do mind outright insults. So far we have not yet seen neither your nor Funster's parodies. You have talked your talk. Now go ahead and walk your walk.

Susanna, you fail to comprehend my comment, which needs no justification. I'll reiterate: I refuse to identify myself by revealing my page. This anonymity is a time-honored privilege employed for many reasons. I despise the childish challenges to an anonymous, thoughtful, negative review with defensive comments which amount to, "Oh, yeah, let's see your parodies, big shot!"

Remember, I have not written a critique of your parody. You have no idea what I think of it. Yet, my simple statement regarding tiresome challenges to reveal a critic's oeuvre has provoked a response from you that I reveal my oeuvre!!

The lingua franca here is English.

Yeah yeah, any pooch can bark in the bushes and any coward can hide behind the anonymity. And any fscktard can throw in insults anonymously and call it "critique". But no pooches ever dare facing hounds at open and no coward dare to show their own works, and no fscktards ever dare to even try doing better than those they dismiss.

Anonymity is never a "honoured privilege". It is always the sign of a coward, someone who doesn't dare to face.those they insult, and only pissweak cravens like you hide behind anonymity. You have talked your talk. No go walk your walk, windbag.

Anonymous poochie: I speaks seven languages and understand a dozen more as text. You don't master ever your own.

Finland is a putrid place filled with great many grimy animals. No wonder they flock to sea to escape the foul odor of their land. We should have put them all under heavy chains and sent them to Siberia. They were Nazzi puppets on crooked strings behaving like the wild dogs
Anonymity Infinity - July 09, 2014 - Report this comment
Too bad your parodies do not reflect your claims of language in terms of grammar and common terms. Bad or broken English does not count either, Spinster Finster!
Callmelennie - July 09, 2014 - Report this comment
What a miserable wretch you are, oh Troll of the Many Names. In fact, Susanna's slight non-fluencies do reflect her genius in foreign languages. Her native language in Finnish. Do you have any idea how different Finnish is from English? It's not even in the same language family (Indo European) as English. In other words her native language is more distant from English than is Hindi or Persian Farsi. And yet she is one of the most prolific English song parodists, ever. That's miraculous. Instead of ridiculous nit-picking, we should be culling out fatted calves and offering it to her as a burnt sacrifice ....... And as for your valid criticism, what would that be -- calling her works "boring nautical nonsense?" That's just a cheap insult. What's boring about sailing? Why is a parody song about something she loves necessarily nonsense? And what on earth would motivate you to say such a wretched thing to someone who's never done you the slightest bit of harm

CML: Do not assume that the pseudonyms here belong to the same person. I, Anon, stand apart from the others, and my two comments are respectful, centering not on Susanna's parody but her reply to "Funster," which calls him a barking pooch who is afraid to face the hounds by revealing his parodies and identity. As far as I'm concerned, Funster, Yuri, and Anonymity Infinity can be as mean as they want and Susanna can report their comments for any reason.
Despite the encomiums heaped on herself by you and her regarding her language abilities, she either fails to show comprehension of my plain English comments or she cannot summon the logic to deal with them. Moreover, she is so snappish and awash in self-regard that I have given up paying attention to her as I have to another "vet" who fills these pages with braggadocio. "Fscktards," indeed. A fine sample of her writing ability!

Susanna, what exactly is a Fscktard? Is that the full extent of your multilingual vocabulary? Bwahahahaha!!!
Observer - July 10, 2014 - Report this comment
It could be a fumbled thumb, or an ignored autocheck, or perhaps SV has enough propriety to not fully type out the F-word. In any case, who gives a fsck?
Patrick - July 11, 2014 - Report this comment
To Observer: Sometimes there are filters on comment sections to remove certain words. I have seen this a number of times on various sites. Users quickly learn to vary the spellings slightly so that the reader will get the effect without triggering the censorship program.

Replace the 's" with 'u' and you get the point - it is a way to get qrap past the radar. Besides that, 'fsck' is also the file system check in UNIX. Give wrong parameters and you might get your disk not only not checked, but fscked.
