The Lyrics

The trick: To take two legendary story-songs of the Seventies and combine them. Who is up to the challenge? I am.
(long, long instrumenal opening)

There's a ship I am sure, filled with iron in ore
and the ship's called the Edmund Fitzgerald.
When it gets home, I know, they won't see port that's closed.
November gales, they'll get what they came for.

Ooh ooh woo, ooh ooh woo, ooh ooh woo, ooh ooh woo
And the ship's called the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The ship was the pride of America's side
coming back from a mill in Wisconsin.
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
with a crew and good captain well-seasoned.

Ooh ooh woo, ooh ooh woo, ooh ooh woo, ooh ooh woo
And the ship's called the Edmund Fitzgerald.

There's a feeling I get, hurricane from the west
and a wave's breaking over the railing.
And each man aboard knew, as the captain did, too
'twas the Witch of November come stealing.

Ooh, and it makes me wonder.
Ooh, and it makes me wonder.

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck
saying, "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya."
At seven P.M., a main hatchway gave in.
He said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya."

Ooh, and it makes me wonder.

If there is water coming in now, don't be alarmed now.
It's Whitefish Bay in another fifteen.
Yes, there were two paths you could go by, but in the long run
if you live, songs about you they won't sing.

Tell me, where does the love of God go, does anyone know?
When waves turn minutes to hours?
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
your sailor boy dies in the howling wind!

(guitar break)

And as the iron boats all go
in memory of all those souls
since then the mariners all know
watch out for November's gales sprayed.
And in the Detroit church they prayed.
And if you listen very hard
the church bell gives 29 chimes
for all the men lost on that boat
that went down Gitchee Gumee's throat!

(guitar close)

And the ship was called the Eh-hed-mund...

Fitzgerald.
It's amazing how well these two songs -- one based in reality, the other totally in fantasy, but two very different acts -- are actually so similar in rhythm. Really, Zep fans: You can imagine Robert Plant writing words like "'Twas the Witch of November come stealing," can't you?

MASTERPIECE. Congratulations, MP, extremely clever and well-crafted.

However ... instead of "Ooh, and it makes me wonder", I would have preferred something like "Ooh, and the lake-sea thunders".

Wow, 1 vote up until mine? Shame, this was a really good idea. I agree with Johnny D, and IMHO simply titling it "Edmund Fitzgerald" may have gathered more attention.

This is excellent Michael! (My sympathy to you for having to listen to the two O.S's over and over tho'.... :-)
