The Lyrics

I like Neil Diamond. Unlike Josh Lyman (played by Bradley Whitford on "The West Wing"), I like Neil Young better. Face it, Young keeps on rockin' in the free world, while Diamond has become "The Jewish Elvis," and as Dick Smothers would say, "That was not a compliment!" Rick Duncan, who spoofed "I Am, I Said" in "I Am Quite Dead," would understand.
(instrumental opening)

Big deal, he keeps on singing
sells out Caesars, Desert Inn.
Singing songs about this great land.
He misses Brooklyn once again
when L.A., he's in.

Well, I heard Mister Young singing good songs.
Well, I heard Josh Lyman turned him down.
Well, I hope Neil Diamond remembers
a Solitary Man, he's coming down, anyhow.

Sweet home, he don't know which.
Why this guy seems so blue.
Sweet home, he don't know which.
His ambivalence shines through.

In '69, he loved Sweet Car'line.
Woo, hoo, hoo.
And he sang songs very blue.
"September Morn," well, it bothers me.
Does "Desiree" bother you?
Now, tell the truth.

Sweet home, he don't know which.
Why this guy seems so blue.
Sweet home, he don't know which.
His ambivalence shines through.

(instrumental break)

Now, "Cracklin' Rosie" got him big bucks.
And a great guitar, he's been known to play.
"Jumped the shark" with "Jazz Singer"
with Lucy's girl and Olivier.
My my, hey hey.

Sweet home, he don't know which.
Why this guy seems so blue.
Sweet home, he don't know which.
His ambivalence shines through.

Sweet home, he don't know which.
(Brooklyn?)
Why this guy seems so blue.
(Ist der Guv'nor true?)
Sweet home, he don't know which.
(Oy vey.)
His ambivalence shines through.

Yeah, yeah, Red Barber's got the answer.

(instrumental fadeout)
Ironic, how the poet laureate of Neil Diamond's home Borough was a... Southern Man. (From Mississippi by way of Florida. It was the Yankee broadcaster, Mel Allen, who was from Alabama.) And "Lucy's girl" is Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz.

What's truly amazing: there's a guy who performs as a "Neil Diamond tribute," a parody of a self-parody. Good parody. 5s

Wake me up when "September Morn" ends.
Nice job, Michaelopedia. I love Neil Diamond's earliest stuff; can't stand anything after it. He's working with infallible producer Rick Rubin on a big comeback album, though, so stay tuned.

if it wasn't The Jazz Singer, the shark may have been tandem-jumped by Neil and Jonathon Livingstone Seagull - 555 (loved his Monkees songs too)
