The Lyrics

"Dry Your Eyes" is one of Neil Diamond's most majestic and moving songs. It was written about a mentor who inspired him during his early days as a songwriter, though, as far as I know, the identity of that individual has yet to be revealed. Just last week the name of one of my mentors was revealed to me, in a tragic email announcing the recent death of a fellow by the name of Steven L Victor of Cocoa Beach, Florida. We all knew him as "Tommy Turtle", a pseudonym reflecting his love for nature and the gentle sea creatures who shared the beach front area where he lived. I was privileged to correspond with Tommy over the last couple of years. His insights into politics, sociology, and songwriting are something I will always cherish. Several months ago Tommy wrote his farewell to AmIRight. He told me that he had to devote his time to carrying for "someone close to him" who was facing a serious illness. Little did I know he was referring to himself. Tommy valued his privacy, and I suppose it was in keeping with his character that he sought no sympathy for himself. To the best of my knowledge, there is no obituary in any local newspaper. For those of us who enjoy the art of parody writing, Steve, Tommy, will live on in the works that he posted and the comments he left for our writings. Adios, Tortuga.
Grabbed my pen and took my notebook
On this winter afternoon
For a salute to Tommy Turtle
I'll put lyrics to this tune

Match the notes and score them, careful
'ere I post them to the site
Type them like I know he's watching
Monday morn' at AmIRight

From the italic introduction
To the notes at the very end
May he never be forgotten
For I count him as my friend
With tears in my eyes

Yes, he taught us more about pacing
Then we ever thought we'd learn
He revealed poetic secrets
We would imitate in turn

It was more than just pedantic
And techniques he would share for free
He liked to praise the best in others
And correct respectfully

Then came that frightening email message
And the news that brought me gloom
Of malignant, spreading cancer
That had claimed him far too soon
Hail, Tommy, good-bye

Tommy, Good-Bye.
I know you were not a believer. But, just in case you now know otherwise, Tommy, you'll always be more than just a footnote at AIR. Patrick

A very nice and fitting tribute, I doubt if even Tommy could make any corrections...but I'll bet he's up there adding footnotes...rest in peace, TT

Patrick, I too searched unsuccessfully for an obituary. I really know all I need to know about Steve, but I would have liked to know a little bit more.

Your poem is well done, but I think I liked the words at the end most of all.

It was good to hear from some of the first tier writers. To paraphrase Neil Diamond, Tommy's angel descended much too soon. "Dry Your Eyes" seemed to be the most appropriate OS to work with.
